Seems like NBC‘s bosses have been paying close attention to all the drama concerning the Ann Curry debacle and the Today show’s sliding rankingsafter all after a report courtesy of page 6which suggests that NBC’s owners,Comcast, are looking to scale back their production costs and that now includes getting Matt Lauer to give up some of his hefty re signing fee of $25 million.
With the dismal performance of the Today show since the beginning of the year and the embarrassing behavior or higher ups who did a piss poor job of handling Ann Curry’s forced departure(many say at the hands of co anchor Matt Lauer) perhaps it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Comcast may want to use the slide in revenues as a consequence of the fracas and falling viewership to rein in Matt Lauer.
Of course to be fair to Matt, he did make a deal with NBC for the big bucks and they shook on it so perhaps he shouldn’t have to give any part of his deal away (although it is understood Jay Leno, another highly paid veteran at the network did agree to a pay cut earlier last month to help keep the network afloat and to save jobs at the Tonight Show).
Then again $25 million is a lot to pay someone who has bungled things up and quite frankly isn’t performing, and one could only imagine the unease if the network starts firing staff at the Today show whilst Matt gallivants along in the morning amiably sipping at his chamomile tea.
Matt what do you think, want to give at least a couple of million bucks to your team mates who probably face the axe because of your indiscretions?
