The reassignment of Ann Curry, one the most heartfelt and real co-anchors the Today Show has ever had, is a travesty. We deserve to know why this is happening. Ann Curry probably gave one of the most difficult news reports of her entire career this morning; that of her ouster and how those damn tears came out… It was never going to be pleasant and it has been generally understood that Ann Curry would at some point have to go public and basically admit that she has been thrown out of  journalism’s most revered roles, that of co anchor of NBC’s the ‘Today show.’ And brutal and bitter sweet it was. Perhaps rueful might be the better word: “This is not easy to say,” Curry said at the start of her tearful announcement, “but today is going to be my last morning as a regular co-host of ‘Today.’” And she continued after a long pause: “this is not as I expected to ever leave this couch after 15 years.” Curry’s voice then grew husky with emotion as the moment seemed to sink in, and her eyes filled with tears. “I’m going to have a new title and a new role,” she said. She addressed the viewers directly. “You are the real ‘Today’ show family,” She added “For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line–but man, I did try.” And then in the end, the ship faded out deep behind our view: “To all of you watching, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours.”  Could it be even more brutal than that? Even Matt Lauer generally understood to be one of the major authority figures behind the backstabbing of much revered Ann Curry couldn’t hide his emotions. Even if by now he has paradoxically gone from a beloved hero to a much maligned figure: “You have the biggest heart in the business,” he offered his eyes averting hers. “It’s not goodbye, not by a long shot.” a grim-faced Lauer said.

Ann Curry’s exit represents NBC’s most visible response to the popular morning show’s worst stretch in the ratings in nearly two decades. “Today” hadn’t lost a single week since 1996, but this spring it was beaten four times by ABC’s resurgent “Good Morning America.” Such are the bitter affairs of corporate media and the public that watches the fantasy of it’s news heroes go up in flames… Ann Curry fired: Officially leaving Today, to make farewell speech imminently. 1. Ann Curry was treated abominably on the air. I enjoyed and respected her work. I have watched the Today Show for years, and this is the first time I am tempted to stop doing so. NBC execs have made a characteristically BAD decision, and handled it like a clump of rank amateurs. Shame on them.

  2. Well, blame it on NBC. Those guys really know how to make someone feel like garbage. I think Ann Curry is a good person, but NBC should have never promoted her anyway. As an anchor she was not as polished as a Katie Couric or Meredith Viera just to name a few. What is sad though is the way NBC handle the whole situation from the beginning. She seems like a good human being that did not deserve to be treated that way. I wish the best for her in her new role.

  3. I think it is sad to see such a wonderful reporter being fired just because Matt can’t be as good as her and always needs to be in the spotlight. Look at the resume this woman has built, compare it to Matt’s and then see who should be fired. Matt is no where near worth 20 million dollars. I hope NBC’s ratings get worse with her gone. Maybe NBC should have thought the drop in ratings might be because more families are working multiple jobs and not home, or just horrendous reporting on Matt’s behalf and obvious/blatant disrespect of his co-host. It’s on to GMA for me.

  4. I really like Ann Curry, as a person, but as a co-host, not so much. She always seemed to be uneasy and stumble and fumble her lines. However, I think they could have let her go without leaking it to the press first which I believe they did in order to get her out quickly! I wish her much success in the future because she seems like a good, kind-hearted person, which is rare in the business, it seems!

  5. I feel bad but I didn’t really like her much as a co-host. Hard to put my finger on why, she just didn’t have “it” for me personally and when she became full time I switched to GMA. She does seem like a really nice person though and it seems unfortunate as to how they went about replacing her, this video is hard to watch.

  6. This woman has a whole lot of class. Through the knowing that they(NBC) was going to fire her at any moment, she showed true professionalism on every broadcast. She deserves much more than she was shown by the network. I happened to meet her one morning back in ’02 outside of the today show studios i was working at a florist shop at the time and she was out front with her children waiting for a her ride home and we spoke, and exchanged the pleasentries of each other. She didn’t have to she could have blown me off,but she took her time and spoke with me. That is the best thing i got from her. She treated everyone the same: WITH CLASS. Something NBC forgot to do with her. Ann if you read this or someone in your circles when one door closes, another one opens. You will be back in something new and BETTER. I will miss you in the mornings. Thank you.

  7. Ann Curry was the only reason I watched the TODAY show. She’s a beautiful, compassionate, caring, REAL person. NBC’s ratings have just gone down the toilet! TODAY has now become THE TITANIC, and Ann is lucky to have gotten off before it sets sail with the arrogant Matt – THE SNOB – Lauer yelling “I’m king of the world” on the bow of the ship as it sails towards it’s now fateful demise! God bless you Ann Curry! GOODBYE TODAY, HELLO GMA TOMORROW!

  8. This is a sad day for American television. The reassignment of Ann Curry, one the most heartfelt and real co-anchors the Today Show has ever had, is a travesty. We deserve to know why this is happening. This makes me doubt the decision-making ability of NBC, and I will perhaps go to another morning show. I have been a loyal viewer for many years, but this is an outrage, and I truly feel for Ann. This back-biting business has got to get a grip. You are making a bad decision in ousting Ann Curry.
