Did Marina Krim’s nanny Yoselyn Ortega have a motive?

Why did a Manhattan nanny stab Marina Krim’s two children to death?

In the aftermath of the horrific double murders of the Marina and Kevin Krim‘s two children, 6 year old Lulu Krim and 2 year old Leo Krim at the hands of the Krim family’s nanny Yoselyn Ortega, authorities and media pundits alike have been probing as to what could have led to the inconceivable murders.

Theories have ranged from mental illness, psychological distress to abject hate towards her employers, the Krim family, who Ms Ortega may have viewed with resentment and scorn given their privileged lifestyle in relation to her to next impossible lifestyle which her struggling to keep afloat and disillusioned with her lot to the point of self capitulation.

That said authorities who yesterday begun the arduous task of interviewing the family nanny who was once considered part of the family (the Krim’s are said to have visited Ms Ortega’s family in the Dominic Republic and bestowed her with gifts) are now beginning to come with a clearer picture as to what preempted the 50 year old nanny’s actions.

Since regaining proper consciousness after a failed suicide attempt at the time of the murders Ms Ortega as of this Saturday past who has been kept at Weill Cornell Medical center under tight security was formally charged with first and second degree murder of Lulu and Leo Krim.

During the questioning process which began Saturday afternoon and interestingly without the presence of a lawyer (it is understood Ms Ortega waived her right to a lawyer even though it was previously reported that she demanded one when she regained partial consciousness earlier in the week) authorities were as a consequence emboldened to formally charge the nanny early Saturday evening at 6.06pm.

That said what makes the case even more controversial and will most certainly heighten the accusations and the distress as to what preempted the murders Ms Ortega to date has declined to acknowledge she was the individual who killed the children instead countering that Marina Krim according to the nytimesknows what had happened.’

She told the detectives that “Marina knows what happened,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case. The police have said that Ms. Krim walked into the bathroom to find Ms. Ortega stabbing herself in the throat, with the dying children bleeding in the bathtub.

The official said that while Ms. Ortega was not medicated, she seemed “spacy.”

The official said that while the Krim family did not have problems with their relationship with Ms. Ortega and seemed to live an idyllic life, Ms. Ortega, based on what she told the investigators, had a different view.

“She had resentment towards the parents” and said “they were always telling her what to do,” according to the official.

Time will tell as to the exact dynamics that went on between Ms Ortega and her employer, the Krim family and what this may suggest about the time trusted concept of well to do families continuing to hire nannies and what this case suggests as to the socio economic tensions that may or may not exist as two little discussed polarities continue to manifest themselves in large dynamic cities like NYC. One being the advantaged and privileged families like the Krim family who are in the position of empowerment and that of individuals like Ms Ortega who are faced with bitter realities that so often lead them to making horrendous decisions that so often cause the rest of us to grimace with shock, outrage and utter despair.

That said I have copied and pasted a variety of comments that readers on this site have already left that have made me wonder at the risk of possibly inflaming the issue…

Well obviously the children were quite a handful considering that the stay the home mom hired a nanny to help. Rapido and furiouso indeed.

You are disgusting. The mother of those beautiful children loved every minute with them—she blogged that the best part of her day was the time alone with her son when the girls were at school. It’s widely reported that she didn’t leave her kids with the nanny very often—Ortega was only there to help out. If I had three children, I’d do the same—it’s dangerous walking in the city with three kids.

So many women hire cheap labor don’t talk to their kids or the help and assume all is okay
People raise your own kids and stop putting your children at risk! The kids did not have a say so but were with a walking time bomb. I do not care what they say you don’t know a person from a thirld world country!

Ortega was so “well paid” that she couldn’t afford an apartment in the Bronx. The moment that people start to earn a living wage, they run away from the Bronx. Ortega gave up raising her own children, in order to raise the Krim children. That strikes me as hard and sad. Nannies have the least personal authority in this situation, less than that of the 2-year old. The response of the Krims to her personal distress, likely brought on by poverty, was to threaten and further humiliate her. Chasing after not one, but three small children wasn’t hard enough, Ortega had to be made to scrub toilets as well. If you beat a dog often enough, even a tame one will eventually bite.

Well, I’d say you can pay your bills and have a roof over your head and have no idea of the stresses that the poor endure. Read down and out in pais and London by George Orwell.

Anyway, just to remind you if there is too big. Difference between rich and poor you get revolution of some sort.
You may not like paying for the poor but that is the price that comes with being rich.

I have friends that are extremely wealthy and by that, I mean billonaires. One in particular would be….. ….. ….. who I grew up with. Our families are very close knit. Do I take it out on him that he is wealthy or that I am jealous? Of course not, and no one else should either. Sick and tired of those that have next to nothing blaming others for their fortune. If you work hard, you can achieve financial success. Don’t begrudge those that are sitting high on the hog. It’s your own fault if you have little. The wealthy are not responsible for the poor, and to anyone that thinks otherwise, move away and live with like minded individuals.

18 years ago, I secretly video taped my daughters nanny, because we became suspicious when after 4 months, she would still cry everytime we left home for work. The video tape was horrifying. The moment we left, TV Mundo would go on for the entire day, while my daughter just crawled around the room. We fired her the next day.

Regardless of terrible murders … – i don’t think it’s a very good idea to get that close with your “help” … treating help almost like family.. go on the same trips with them etc…

For most normal people it’s no problem .. – but for some coo-coos Jealousy etc can come into play some day … — they might start feeling that they are family .. when they are NOT … and some day reality comes into play …. and those who are psychologically messed up .. who knows what kind of weird / bad things they can do some day..

You are a idiot.. a lot of the people here are missing the point. I don’t care if the family paid her pennies the nanny had no right to hurt the babies. And the family also tried to get her another nanny job and at the last minute the other family bailed because of the nanny’s demeanor.. The nanny is a MURDERER and I don’t care about her poor pathetic life…

I wish that people would stop judging hard working mothers that hire help to care for their children. Nobody saw this coming, it was a terrible tragedy. Don’t you people know that more mothers murder their own children that nannies? My heart goes out for the Krims. Hopefully they never get to read this pointless ignorant judgmental comments.

  1. I created a spanish page in support of the Krim Family.
En apoyo a la familia Krim (In support of the Krim family)

  2. Wow it almost sounds like the writer and people are feeling sorry for the Nanny because the Krims are rich. Nothing excuses murder and I think the Nanny obviously has mental problems and extreme resentment. With that said I think it’s time for rich Americans to quit hiring immigrants to work in their homes. Look at Arnold Schwarznegger and the nanny was a Spanish speaking woman. I think if you give a wild, stray dog a bone and take it home it gets too comfortable and then it bites the hand that feeds it. I think there are better ways to find nannies and babysitters. There are plenty of White American teenagers who would gladly help out and need the money. There are plenty of honest, hard-working Americans without work who would gladly tend the yards, landscaping, handyman around the house; we do not need to keep outsourcing our jobs and hiring immigrants to work for the rich.

  3. i feel no sympathy for this woman. yeah, my boss always tells me what to do. i don’t make enough money. that doesn’t make me want to kill two innocent children.

  4. This is a horrible story….we should pray for everyone involved. I find people always rush to judgement or look for excuses. The truth will come to light eventually. We are all entitled to our opinions….however it is no excuse to attack each other. Mental illness is running rapid in America…and it not just the poor,,,but often the poor do not have the resouces available to them. I don’t begrudge anyone for being wealthy….and many people work hard everyday and yet the still fall under the poverty line. Until we come together as a country…. these things are going to continue. It is the love of money, that usually leads to a path of despair……we should be our brother’s keeper….and unite during times of trouble. Everyone has their own world view which is shaped by their own experiences….don’t judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Pray and be grateful for the life you have….go out and make a difference in the world….and stop attacking each other!

  5. Kevin Krim , CNBC executive , father of the children,he exposed a 43trillion lawsuit against Banksters and the Obama administration, next day his kids are killed by a nanny, same day the article is taken off of the CNBC site , not before many people copied and posted on several blogs, how obvious is this situation, even the blind could see this woman was blackmailed to kill these children ,if in fact she killed them . The real criminals are those banksters, demand justice for those children, do not let the real criminals run free! May those angels R.I.P as for us , we need to fight for justice and for KEVIN KRIM who is fighting for THE PEOPLE.

  8. At the first inkling that an employee is not performing, fire them or talk to them about picking up their act but don’t mention firing.
I have made some bad employee choices. Once you think about firing someone then probably should just do it.

  9. The blog is back up. I read it. Whilst there is a lot of sunshine in it I can also see tha Marina Krim expected things her way. Ok staff is one thing but in her teaching art classes at the school she didn’t like the teacher saying no to her project reminding her that the art project must reflect the curriculum. Another incident was calling the immigration officer an a hole because he said something to her kid who was tired and crying. Get over it. No body loves anyone else’s screaming kid. No matter how cute.
I also suspect the kids didn’t get enough sleep. That makes children fractious. Many posts where she admits where the kids were p at 11pm. The next day they had school or preschool.
The act is extreme. Don’t forgive Mrs Ortega and she should go to jail for a very long time but I am not so impressed with Mrs Krim.

  10. I had a boss who used me like a work horse and paid me next to nothing. I took it for six months and one day got up and walked out. This nanny acts like she was entitled to a piece of their fortune and since she didn’t get it, she took from them what was most valuable to them. The nanny sounds very evil. She’s not mentally ill. She’s evil.

  11. No one is saying that Ortega was justified in any way with what she did. Most disgruntled workers don’t kill their bosses or their children. However, I wouldn’t ignore the warning signs that are now becoming clearer after these murders. Parents really need to determine if it is worth having someone watching their children who doesn’t have a stable home or financial situation. Those are most often the things that make people desperate. Thankfully, murdering children is rare and there was no way for Marina Krim to anticipate this act, but she probably did get into an uncomfortable situation where she saw Ortega’s plight, and despite any unhappiness with her demeanor with the children, was reluctant to fire her because of her empathy toward Ortega’s pathetic situation.

  12. I have not been able to stop thinking about Lucia and Leo. Everyday they are in my thoughts. All I read are articles trying to find a reason that made the nanny commit such evil act. Nothing justifies the murdering of two innocent small children. Leo was sleeping and Lucia fought back. This was a planned act. What did these children have to do with Ms Ortegas problems? Why did they have to suffer and die when they possibly didnt know what was going on. Nothing in the world justifies the murder of Leo and Lucia by a mad woman.

  13. If you are unhappy with your job and/or boss you quit your job … you walk away …. you leave … you do not murder innocent children.

  14. Well, Ortega might have chosen NOT to have kids at a young age, and take evening classes, and climb the social ladder…that is what people do when they want to improve their lifes. But is is so much easier to do nothing, pick up dead-end jobs and develop hate and resentment. No excuses, please. People have the right to be rich and have great lifes. Ortega is a moron and a psychopath…

  15. WOW!!! People are stupid sometimes! HOW is there ANY justification for murdering those helpless children? It’s not the mother’s fault for hiring a nanny. It’s not the parent’s fault for being rich. It’s not the children’s fault that the nanny had financial issues and didn’t want to be paid to be a housekeeper. The ONLY party that has any blame in this is the NANNY. And I truly hope that when the state of New York is through with her, there will be a nice corner in hell reserved for her…

  16. The Krim family was more than fair to this jealous, crazed woman. When she was having financial problems, they offered to give her more chores like simple cleaning to help her out. She is a crazy, psycho bitch. She took the lives of two beautiful, innocent children in the most horrific way – knowing that the poor mother would come looking for them and discover the terrible scene. I hope she rots in prison and never sees the light of day.

  17. Is anyone here really going to feel sorry for a woman whose boss “told her what to do” and she didn’t like that? My boss tells me what to do all the time – I’ve no intention of murdering his family. The bottom line is that she murdered children. She was capable of murdering children and did murder children. Perhaps this is a telling reason as to why she never fared well in life and never held a long term, full time job and was unable to save money? Her personality is one that allowed her to murder children when disgruntled with her employer. Doesn’t sound like she has any remorse either. She is trying to get sympathy for being told what to do at her job. Any person who can find empathy for this clearly sociopathic woman is well, perhaps also sociopathic.

  18. Marina Krim was a stay at home mom. Her husband obviously travelled for work. She had three children. It is not easy raising three kids in the city with a husband that does not have a M-F 9 to 5 job. By all accounts Marina Krim is a wonderful mother. She adored her children and according to her blog (which I had the privledge of seeing before it was taken down), adored her children and spent a lot of time with them – parks, baking, pumpkin patch, etc. Of course she was going to tell the nanny what to do. She was “the boss”. But regardless of what she told the nanny, or said to the nanny, nothing deserves what has happened to this family. Everyone is told what to do by their bosses. No matter who you are, you have problems (money, illnesses, etc) – everyone has their cross to bear. You do not go and slaughter children because you think their parents “deserve it”, No parent deserves to have what happened to those two little angels happen to their children. My heart breaks for the parents and maybe even more so for Nessie. How do you explain to a child why she no longer has siblings??????

  19. No, “with_kids” you are completely right. I am stunned, STUNNED, by the poor quality of this writing. I can’t recall reading an article online written this poorly, ever. I almost could not understand what the writer was trying to say with some of these sentences. I can’t believe this was posted without any editing whatsoever. It is AMAZINGLY bad writing and editing. I did actually think this might have been written by an ESL writer, which is great – but it should have been edited.

  20. I agree with what you are saying and the psychologist should be sued for letting her work with children if her mental state was not stable.

  21. really disgusting posts. The bottom line is, the nanny was crazy and most people in this country are in therapy, get it together people- if she had psychological problems she should not have been working with the children. Her actions questions the trust for many families. Stop bitching about Marina you bitches- she is a mother and so are you, everyone has their own priorities. I hope that the nanny is severely punished and a fucked up jury comprised of all your crazies doesn’t take pity on the nanny.

  22. It was actually when she was working for the Krims that she was able to move into an apartment of her own (and seemingly for the first time in her life). However, the owner came back from the Dominican Republic after only three months and kicked her out. I think this defeated her and started her extra deterioration. It’s said she spent a lot of money on that apartment, and I bet most of that money came from her salary with the Krims.

And she was only working for the Krims part time – just a few hours a day. If much more then they wouldn’t have been trying to get her additional work as a nanny with their friends. So the Krims didn’t need her that much and she was mainly to help juggle the children.

As on the day of the death, Marina was out with her 3-year-old at a swimming lesson. Marina was the type that seemed to stay all the hours of her childrens’ swim and dance lessons and recitals. She probably didn’t think it fair for the non-participatory children to have to sit through hours of another’s swim lessons and from there go to hours of another child’s dance class and have the other children sit through hours of that. It would especially be hard on the baby.

That nanny never had a good-paying job and never saved much money. One of her past jobs was as a cleaning woman. Perhaps she quit it or was fired because she hated it or was too lazy to clean well. She also told police that the new housekeeping hours interfered with her doctor’s appointments and personal life. Well, doctors are expensive so that’s where more of her money went.

Despite her anger at being given 5 hours a week of housecleaning duties (& to help her earn extra pay), she didn’t take her anger out on tearing up the house. Instead she slaughtered the children and made sure not to get the blood on the carpets and upholstery: she put them in the bathtub to prevent stains to the house. I wonder if that was to make some kind of statement to the Krims in the deranged woman’s mind.

Investigators need to talk to the doctor/s and get the records. In a double murder case of perfectly innocent children those records should be completely open for the proper authorities and prosecution’s doctor/analyzers.

  23. you are a genius and everybody thinks you are very smart. people like you should be put on a big pretentious island together so you can all talk about how good you are at puncuation and writing, and then hopefully you will remind each other of your complete inability to ever come anywhere close to obtaining a successful writing career.

  24. Amazingly bad writing and editing. Punctuation, anyone? Missing words. Was this written by an ESL? Just saying… If this was a junior high essay, it would have red ink all over it.
