Here’s an interesting study making the rounds courtesy of French university, Université de Bretagne-Sud. Women with tattoos are more likely to sleep with men on the first date and are perceived by men to be more approachable and even more available for sexual relatons.
The study as headed by French professor Nicolas Guéguen conducted on the beaches of Brittany during the summers of 2008 and 2009 involved 11 university aged women who had been rated the most attractive out of a group of 58 who had visited the beach during the summer, each wearing a temporary tattoo on their lower back 50% of the time and with clean skin the rest of the time.
When women were displaying the tattoos researchers found that the men were more likely to approach and then chat with them, as well as being quicker in making their approach.
The second part of the experiment involved a group of over 400 20something men who were on the beaches at the same time as the sunbathing women where they were quizzed.
The men were subsequently asked to answer two questions about the women, with respect to the likelihood of a romantic relationships: what they thought the likelihood was of the girl agreeing to go out on a date with them, and of the likelihood of having sex on the first date? The men were also asked to rate the girl’s attractiveness.
The results went on to show that women with tattoos were considered both more likely to go on a date and also more likely to have sex on the first date.
Concluded researchers: “Men see (tattoos) as an advertisement of heightened sexual intent and/or receptivity.”
The study was first published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
Critics have gone on to dismiss the study as incomplete because no reasons were given as to why the men reacted this way, whether it is based on stereotypes or personal experiences, and also the survey only took in to account one particular type and placement of tattoo.
Then again it could all have something to do with the fact that when a woman goes out of her way to wear a tattoo, a form of expression once thought unthinkable the woman may sublimely be messaging that she is assertive and not necessarily bound to social norms or expectations of how a ‘proper’ woman ought to behave or be.
Then again perhaps it could be nothing more than that men like the accentuation of women’s skin (which they are apt to do to reveal their tattoos) that may ultimately have them running…
