Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez rides a Manatee

A Florida woman has found herself on the wrong side of the law after photos of her riding a Manatee (sea cow) back in September caught the attention of Florida authorities.

The woman in question, 53 year old Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez who turned herself in after photos of her started floating around argued that she had no idea that riding the marine life (would you?) was against the lawand that she was just feeling her way round, especially since she had just moved to the area.

Ultimately she was charged with a second-degree misdemeanor under Florida’s Manatee Sanctuary Act, which makes it illegal for people to “intentionally or negligently … molest, harass, or disturb any manatee.”

For her troubles, Ms Gutierrez now faces being fined $500 or and possibly being sentenced to 60 days in jail which in the grand scheme of things isn’t such a bad deal considering what it would otherwise cost to hire a jet ski or other fun things that people like to hire when they visit the ocean. Then again how many people do you know who can really boast that they have ridden a manatee?

Authorities said they don’t believe the manatee was physically harmed, although the psychological effects are still unknown, although it is understood that Ms Gutierrez did ‘harass’ up to three manatees during a mating ritual. Indeed….

Of further note it is understood Ms Gutierrez did not return a reporter’s request for comment whilst a man who answered the door at her St. Petersburg home late last night denied that she lived there.
