It finally came to be, Rebecca Martinson‘s exodus from the much ballyhooed Delta Gamma sorority that the University of Maryland student so much aspired to be a part of. Until that is the entity that she coveted so much decided it really did not care for her so much after all. At first told that she faced disciplinary action and even the charter risked being closed down, in the end Rebecca Martinson did the only thing she could do with honor: walk away from the mess she created.

I know the pain of leaving behind a minefield of frothy foul mouthed gestures. But what are we to think of polite sorority girls who sometimes miss the mark? And in Rebecca Martinson’s case, bixch really missed the landmark.

That said here is Delta Gamma’s facebook page resignation letter and a few choice reactions to Becky’s departure. See what you think kids…

Here’s the sorority’s official statement:

Delta Gamma has accepted the resignation of one of its members whose email relating to a social event has been widely distributed and publicized through social media and traditional media channels.

The tone and content of the email was highly inappropriate and unacceptable by any standard.

No matter who released it to the public or how it reached such a mass audience, the email content should not reflect on any sorority woman in general or any fraternal organization at large.

This is a regrettable action by a college junior – a personal email that is now on view for a global audience. And as all reasonable people can agree, this is an email that should never have been sent by its author. Period.

This email should not be depicted in any way as standard or routine or tied to any official sorority voice. It is not an official voice or message and should not be construed as such.

For the young woman who wrote it, we can only express our regret and concerns for landing notoriety in this manner.

We now consider this matter closed.

Any one of us could have made a similar lapse in judgement. We were just lucky enough that when we went to college Facebook did not exist and email was uncommon for anything except school work. It is very sad that this girl’s life and career are ruined because of an email.

What a shame. No matter what, Rebecca Martinson needed to go. However, house business should stay in the house. Shame on those who sent this email out to the public and made all non-Greeks nod their heads and say, “See, we knew it, what a bunch of shallow jerks sorority girls are.”

I think this Facebook page has made the email go more viral than it was originally. Had someone not posted about it every other day, I, and assume many others, wouldn’t have just googled this said email to find out what all the fuss was about.

I’m a proud DG alumnae and I know the sisterhood is far from perfect. I would bet my life that everyone of us used that language a time or two before if not currently. It’s unfortunate that it was said in an email and someone had so much hate, but it happens. We all mess up and have to deal with our consequences for those actions.

But I don’t think the publicity your fb page is giving it makes you any better than she is right now. To make the matter “closed”, you don’t have to have the last word.

Should she have written that email? Yes. Should it have been worded differently? Yes.

You ask people to commit to something, and they fail to commit; their actions need to be called out. She did this, albeit non tactfully.

What about the girl who leaked the email? What is her punishment? I’m 15 years out of college and out of a greek system, but I still believe that some things that are said among friends should remain among friends. Her words were no more egregious than the sorority member who shared this private message with the world.

She’ll land on her feet. Part of me thinks Jon Stewart will offer her a job, given how much joy he and his team are getting out of the delightful phrase “cunt punt.”

I have ZERO sympathy for this girl. It’s not the e-mail that’s the issue for me so much as her tweets that contain hateful racial slurs and anti-gay rhetoric. I only hope she didn’t know how truly ugly she was to the core and now she does and can make a change before she procreates and fills someone else’s heart with superficiality and hate.

That email was heinous on so many levels, but mostly because it exhibited the exact issue that has been funnelling through the media in recent weeks: bullying and slut-shaming.

If she doesn’t realize that her actions were wrong (and not just because it went viral) but the bigger ramifications… it won’t matter if the rest of the world decides to forgive or forget.

We are defined by our actions and while it is unfortunate that one bad action seems to eclipse all the good ones before it, a series of good actions will also overcome the bad eventually.

who cares…DG s were nasty and stuck up when I was in college. Talk about having no individual identity in life..Sororities are for those who do not know how to make friends by themselves..
