The recipe for disaster was all there: a former 80s teen star, Hollywood, and four bottles of prescription drugs. The player in this particular true Hollywood story – Corey Haim. You may remember him from such 80s classics as, The Lost Boys and Lucas. Hopefully you won’t remember him from recent flops like the A&E show, “The Two Coreys,” with friend and former costar Corey Feldman. So, what happened here?
Sgt. Frank Albarren, an LAPD spokesman, said Haim’s death was a result of “an apparent overdose.” – NY Post
If Family Feud were to ask what Corey was up to today, this tragic story would probably be on the list. All jokes aside, this is a serious issue and a real shame. Why does this continue to happen? Could it be because his life peaked before puberty? Perhaps the big screen exposure is too much for a teen’s psyche. The survival rate of a teen heartthrob is not very promising. In a way, putting a child in the spotlight is assisted suicide. It’s amazing how Michael Jackson survived as long as he did. What are these kids being exposed to?
“I was working on Lost Boys when I smoked my first joint,” said Haim. “I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack.” – The London Sun, 2004
Hmm…could be a small factor. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for Hollywood, not to exploit fragile teens for the sake of financial gains. Yes, things have changed since the 80s. We’ve learned a lesson from these tragedies. OK, let me turn off this Miley Cyrus song so I can finish watching the rest of Harry Potter.
