Australian djs Mel Grieg and Michael Christian from Sydney radio outlet 2Day FM have pulled off the prank of a lifetime when early Tuesday they placed a call to King Edward VII hospital in London where Kate Middleton is currently staying due to severe bouts of morning sickness pursuant to her recent announcement of her pregnancy.
Audaciously the pair manage to get through to the nurse’s station where the nurse on duty begins to offer a breakdown of Kate Middelton’s progress as if the person she is actually speaking to so just happens to be the Queen herself (one supposes nurses have just seen it all so why doubt when someone tells you they are the Queen of Sunshine?) just checking in on her granddaughter.
Says the nurse: Kate is about to be ‘freshened up.’
The nurse at one point then goes on to confirm that Kate Middleton is sleeping at the moment and … had an uneventful night.
“She’s been given some fluids, she’s stable at the moment.”
Asked when it would be OK to visit, the nurse said, “I would suggest that any time after nine o’clock would be suitable, because the doctor will be in in the morning, and will just be getting her freshened up in the morning … I would think any time after nine.”
The nurse continued, “She hasn’t had any retching with me, since I’ve been on duty, and she has been sleeping on and off … I think it’s difficult sleeping in a strange bed as well.”
Christian piped in, “Yes, of course, it’s hardly the palace, is it?”
The prank has caused the hospital great embarrassment with hospital director John Lofthouse deploring the rib as ‘a foolish prank call that we all deplore.”
“We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously and we are now reviewing our telephone protocols.”
Radar goes on to note that the station has a checkered history involving content, having been disciplined three years ago when a 14-year-old girl was coaxed, on-the-air, into admitting she’d been raped.
