Could this be not only the last hurrah for Whitney but for Hollywood too?
With the media and the nation as well as invited guests to Whitney Houston’s funeral today one sitting at home had the distinct impression that they weren’t necessarily watching a memorial or funeral in place but rather an inpromptu rock concert designed to awash the past week in national grieving of a fallen star that the nation had suddenly decided to take into their hearts.
In essence today turned out to be a feel good session, with the sudden redemption of a fallen star and the recreation of her legacy. If the singer couldn’t be who we demanded who she be in life, then at least she could be fabricated to be as much in death.
Expected at the charade funeral held at Newark’s New Hope Baptist church are the following guests: Alicia Keys and Kevin Costner to the soul and gospel music royalty from which she hails, including her cousin Dionne Warwick with Aretha Franklin forced to stay out due to leg spasms.
Top names taking part in the service today included Houston’s mentor and record producer Clive Davis, singer Stevie Wonder and Hollywood actor and producer Tyler Perry, who donated his plane to fly her body from Los Angeles to Newark earlier this week.
Ultimately Hollywood couldn’t have wished for a more thrilling goodbye and resurrection, anointed and redeemed by a stellar support Hollywood cast who rushed to lend their name to Whitney’s pathos. The tears streaming down our collective cheeks a concession that sometimes our heroes are too mortal even for us except perhaps in their death….
