According to a report released by the Drug Policy Alliance more arrests were made in NYC last year alone than during the whole entire 19 year period between 1978 and 1996. Which makes us wonder? Are people doing more of the good shit these days or is it just that the cops are getting more fanatical about making busts?
disinfo : Last year, the sixth year in a row that marijuana possession arrests increased, 50,383 people were arrested, according to a report recently released by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and obtained by the policy alliance, which advocates for reform of drug laws.
The figure adds up to 140 arrests a day, making marijuana possession the leading reason for arrest in the city, and represents an 8 percent increase over 2009 and a 69 percent increase since 2005, the alliance reported in a statement issued Thursday.
140 arrests a day? Out of a city of 8 million should that strike us still on the low side? But then again with a police force of just under 35 000 and a myriad of crimes that go on everyday one might just argue that is a particularly aggressive stance. But why?
Should you be stepping out of a police officer’s way next time you cross the street?
