Turning up to Guernica’s 5 year anniversary at Dumbo’s Powerhouse Museum turned out to be a provocative affair which included learning more about the rampant human rights abuses (which Guernica does one heck of a job in documenting) in Nigeria, Africa (amongst many other places in the world) as well as a charming take on the frustrations of the modern day writer hell bent on sexual liberation, Viagra, crack and the finer nuances of being as recanted by staff writer Jonathan Ames.

Best known for their provocative take on arts and politics the pithy mag founded by Joel Whitney and Michael Archer goes a long way in providing a very necessary read in current social dialectics (at last a magazine that spares us the antics on Lindsay Lohan and Jon Gosselin) and the current political milieu that so often gets discounted and relegated to brainless activities that by now so many of us are sadly addicted to.

Before heading to stage I managed to talk with Guernica’s publisher Jennifer Nix who impressed upon me her fear and trepidation in getting in front of the crowd which was in stark contrast to her steely resolve to continue building the magazine and the awareness to some very serious themes that the world just ‘ought to know about.’

Katie Halper’s (mc of the evening) delightful dry humor and the world’s apparent confusion as to her ethnicity (she insists she is Jewish even if the world believes is Peurto Rican) had all of us in a state of disrepair and why not cause sometimes humor is sometimes just the launching pad for bitter tears…
