A Columbus, Ohio man and Grandview Heights high school counselor died during a family vacation while trying to save his drowning son at a Wisconsin state park on Wednesday.
Bryan Stork, 48, entered the water in Wisconsin’s Nicolet Bay in a bid to save the drowning son after the boy struggling in the water during a family vacation. But it was not to be.
Deputies were called around 3:35 p.m. Wednesday after the dad was found unresponsive in the water at Peninsula State Park in the town of Gibraltar according to a Facebook release from the Door County Sheriff’s Office.
Multiple emergency crews responded and pulled the victim from the bay. The father was brought to shore, where responders performed life-saving efforts before the dad was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
A statement from Stork’s brother-in-law, shared on Facebook, said Stork jumped into Lake Michigan after his son went underwater and initially failed to resurface. Other boaters in the area reportedly helped pull him from the water and performed chest compressions until first responders arrived.
Grandview Heights Superintendent Andy Culp confirmed Friday that Stork was a school counselor at the high school. According to the district’s website, he was a 9th and 10th grade counselor, 10TV reported.
‘Bryan was truly the center of Grandview Heights High School. He was a foundational pillar of support, a source of unwavering positivity, and a guiding light for countless students, staff members, and families throughout his time with our district,’ Culp said in a statement. ‘He had an extraordinary gift for making every single person feel seen, heard, and deeply valued. His absence leaves an unimaginable void in our hallways and in our hearts.’
It is unclear at this time what led to the drowning. No additional details were immediately available.
