It looks like Edward Ates didn’t get away with almost the perfect crime. Ates charged with the murder of his son in law has been found guilty of first degree murder and will be spending the rest of his life behind bars.
A jury last month convicted the 65-year-old of shooting and killing Paul Duncsak (DUN-sack) in Duncsak’s northern New Jersey home in Ramsey.
During the six-week trial, Ates’ defense rested on claims that he was too fat to have run up and down stairs to shoot Duncsak, then escape by driving more than 20 hours to his mother’s home in Louisiana.
The defendant Mr Ates claimed that he couldn’t possibly have killed his son in law. Why?- Mental insanity, he wasn’t in the room when it happened. No he was just too fat. Do you believe him? Should we believe him?
Ates was 62 years old and 285 pounds when Duncsak was killed in 2006
In the end the jury decided the motive was far too compelling a reason to exonerate Mr Ates. Sometimes being too clever doesn’t get you too far after all. That of course isn’t stopping Mr Ates lawyers from appealing the jury’s decision.
