Colt Gray Apalachee student shooter excused himself from Algebra class before returning with gun and blasting off 10-15 gunshots at classroom says classmate, Lyela Sayerath who teen gunman was sitting next to prior to mass shooting.
A junior at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia where a school mass shooting left 4 dead, 30 injured and 9 hospitalized had been seated next to the 14 year old ‘student’ gunman before excusing himself out of class only to return with a gun.
Lyela Sayerath, said she was sat next to Colt Gray in algebra class minutes before he began the shooting spree, that left two teachers and two students dead and countless others injured. She told CNN that Colt left the classroom at the beginning of their class at 9:45am, around half an hour before active shooter alerts sounded.
Gray didn’t take a bathroom pass, she said, leading her to initially think he was merely skipping class – before a loudspeaker announcement told teachers to check their emails.

‘He started shooting into the classroom’
She told CNN she heard a burst of gunfire – maybe 10 to 15 shots – and then they were ‘kind of just one after another.’
Adding: ‘When we heard it, most people just dropped to the floor and like kind of crawled in an area like piled on top of each other.’
Students dropped to the floor and crawled to the corner, Lyela said.
‘It seemed like this wasn’t something he planned too well or that he wasn’t really strong with the gun because he didn’t try and shoot our door. Once he saw he couldn’t get in our room, he just went to the next one.’

The gunfire sent students and faculty desperately scurrying for cover as schools across the county went into lockdown and parents scrambled for information.
It wasn’t until he was surrounded by responding police that Gray surrendered to himself, Georgia’s Bureau of Investigation said, with the teen ‘volunteering’ information as he now faces countless murder charges and who is to be tried as an adult.
Wednesday’s shooting is the deadliest of the 45 school shootings so far this calendar year, according to Gun Violence Archive. It is one of 11 school shootings with four or more deaths since 2008.
