A California of abuse of power case has left pundits divided today following reports of a police officer who was caught staging the fake arrest of a 15-year old boy who had sex with his 14-year old daughter on video tape. The officer’s attempt to scare the teen straight including such ‘scare tactics‘ as “Applying force, applying handcuffs, threatening the young man with things such as rape in prison.”
The unnamed California motorcycle cop went round to the youth’s house in uniform and staged a fake arrest, claiming that he was being detained for sexual assault.
As his parents looked on, the officer handcuffed the boy and gave him a five-minute dressing down about his conduct before letting him go.
The officer’s lawyer said the boy’s parents were ‘complicit’ for not standing up to the enraged officer and stopping his ‘tirade.’
Attorney Terry Bowman said: ‘At no time did you hear the parents of the young man objecting, getting upset, crying. So the video is absolutely exculpatory from the cop’s perspective,’ she said.
Of course, there can be no smarter idea than confronting a police officer threatening your already handcuffed 15-year old son with prison rape…
And while the officer made statements such as: ‘You don’t mess with a cop’s daughter. That’s a show of authority, that’s inappropriate,’ one could well wonder whether our officer had taken the time to really consider just what constitutes ‘show of authority’ that counts as ‘inappropriate.’
Handcuffs, over zealous threats, abuse of power, intimidation- the actions of a concerned dad or a rogue cop?
