Were they tempting fate…? A sledding accident over the weekend led to a Frisco, Texas teen girl dying along with a second teen girl in critical condition as she now fights for her life.

16-year-old Elizabeth Marie Angle, a sophomore at Wakeland High School (WHS) and a member of her soccer team was killed when the sled she was riding along with a second 16 year old teen crashed into a tree.

The fatal incident occurred just on 2:30 p.m, Sunday, Jan. 25, in Frisco, the Frisco Police Department (FPD) stated in a news release.

Second teen girl, 16, dies from Frisco sledding accident

Police said two 16-year-old girls were riding on a sled being pulled by a Jeep Wrangler when the sled struck a curb and slammed into a tree. Angle died at hospital, while the second teen, Grace, described as Angle’s ‘best friend’ remained in critical condition.

Authorities declined to publicly identify the driver of the Jeep Wrangler except to say he was a a 16-year-old boy.

Angle’s mother told FOX4 that her daughter had her whole life ahead of her and had just gotten her driver’s license and was out with friends for the snow day.

The parent described her as a ‘bright light, fun spirit, a brave soul.’

Angle’s parents described her as a kind and outgoing girl who leaves behind two sisters, ages 12 and 18.

Frisco teen and Dallas soccer player remembered

Luis Ramos, coach of FC Dallas club team, said in a Facebook post that Angle was a center back who served as a ‘calm voice’ on the team and ‘knew what it meant to stand her ground.’

‘God called her home not in defeat, but in victory. Still guarding. Still strong. Now standing watch from higher ground,’ Ramos wrote, in part. ‘Elizabeth—our defender. Our teammate. Forever part of us.’

WHS’ soccer team also paid tribute to Angle on social media: ‘Please keep her parents, sisters, teammates and coaches from both school and club, friends, classmates, teachers, and community in your thoughts and prayers during this time of grief,‘ they wrote on X.

Children’s hospital issues warning as DA probes case

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Cook Children’s in Fort Worth urged families to use caution when playing on ice. The hospital said its offices have treated 35 children for sledding related injuries, including bone fractures and internal organ trauma, since the weekend.

Implored the children’s hospital, ‘This is not snow that we have here in Texas; this is ice. When kids hit their heads on ice, it can cause catastrophic injuries.’

While it does snow in Frisco, Texas, it is not a guaranteed annual occurrence and usually in small doses. This week’s extreme winter storm has caused havoc and strife across the nation along with tragedy after a private jet plane crashed upon taking off along an icy tarmac.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Ryan Thomas, a spokesperson for the FPD, told The Dallas Morning News that the Denton County District Attorney’s Office will determine if criminal charges will be pursued against the driver of the Jeep.
