Faris Hussain, Fort Worth, Texas store manager at Evans Food Mart hailed a hero after rescuing freezing homeless woman negotiating winter storm in parking lot. Generosity that likely saved woman’s life as officials discuss strategies to assist unhoused individuals amid extreme weather.
As frigid weather descended across the United States this week, a South Fort Worth, Texas store manager has been hailed a hero after bringing in a homeless woman found frozen outside a local food mart store.
As many unhoused locals headed off to shelters amid crushing winter storms and plunging temperatures, one local woman, known as Bobby who is often found near Evans Food Mart chose to remain outside, as the homeless woman was willing to risk the dire elements, likely at her own peril.
Good Samaritan comes to the rescue of stranded Fort Worth homeless woman
Fortunately there was salvation for Bobby as Farin Hussain, a manager at the food mart store and a regular customer came across the woman and rushed to aid her after spotting Bobby on the ground in the parking lot.
‘When I heard her name, it was one of my good customers, so I instantly was like, ‘Hey man, no no no, there’s no way. We gotta go help her right now,” Hussain told CBS News.
Hussain ran outside and lifted her himself.
‘She felt like a rock, as stiff as a rock,’ the Good Samaritan told the outlet. ‘I mean, it was, when I picked her up, her entire body was just, it was like, no matter which way you picked her up, her body was going to stay the same form.’
Hussain carried Bobby inside, where the frigid woman slowly warmed up as the grateful woman thanked people around her. She told them she had been outside all night.
Community members coming together to assist the less fortunate during dire time of need
Community groups and outreach teams were already out in the field ahead of this week’s winter storm, checking on people living outside and tracking where they were staying. Volunteers handed out beanies and hand warmers, along with being directed to local shelters with expanded capacities according to KERA News.
The Fort Worth Fire Department confirmed crews responded to Evans Food Mart between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., Thursday as paramedics took the homeless woman to a hospital.
Hussain said helping people in need is part of the store’s daily routine.
‘I don’t really consider myself a hero or nothing, but we just, we do this on a daily for our community,’ the store manager said. ‘Doing it once in a while, it’s not going to cut it. That’s just, you know, we do it on a daily for our daily customers all the time, every time.
Hussain’s fast response underscores a simple point: city systems matter, but so do the people who notice when someone is in trouble and decide not to walk past.
As per the City of Fort Worth, residents can dial 311 and press 9 to get up-to-date details on shelters. The official guidance spells out when the overflow system switches on: 40 degrees in wet conditions, below 35 in dry conditions, or a wind chill under 32 for three or more consecutive hours. When those thresholds are met, people are directed to Union Gospel Mission, Presbyterian Night Shelter, or The Salvation Army Mabee Center if beds are available. The entire setup is designed to move people inside before the cold turns life-threatening.
Bobbi’s condition was unknown after being hospitalized. Hussain said he would share an update when he sees her again.
