A 38-year-old man has been charged with the triple homicide of his wife, mother-in-law & teen neighbor following a Sunday night shooting at a Sandy, Oregon residence following a four police stand-off.
Bryan Andrew Moore appeared in court on Monday facing three counts of first-degree, along with attempted aggravated murder for wounding a police officer in Sunday’s incident.
Moore was also charged with kidnapping two separate people for the purposes of holding them as a shield or hostage, and with being a felon in possession of a firearm, KATU reported.
Sandy, Oregon shooting leads to 4 hour stand-off
Prosecutors say Moore fatally shot his wife, Jenna Mary Overson, 37, aka Jenna Overson-Martinez on Facebook, her mother, Mary Beth Overson, 70 and teen neighbor Kobyn Allen McClure, 16, during what investigators described as a domestic violence incident at a home in the 39500 block of Evans Street.
Sandy police said officers and Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, May 31, to reports of a disturbance and shooting and immediately came under fire.
One officer was flown to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, Police Chief Patrick Huskey said at a news conference. The suspect surrendered to law enforcement just before 8 p.m., ending a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
Criminal history and cry for help on social media
Oregonlive reported Moore having a criminal history going back to 2007, when he was convicted of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Moore was also convicted of theft, criminal mischief and various drug offenses.
In 2017, he was accused of assaulting another man with a knife. He was convicted of attempting to commit a Class B felony and unlawful use of a weapon and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in state prison the outlet reported.
Social media posts show Moore and wife, Jenna Overson publicly describing each other as devoted partners in the months before the shooting, with Overson calling him a healing presence for her three sons.
In a post last fall, she wrote that he ‘healed pieces of us’ and loved her boys ‘as his own,’ while a November photo caption invited others to share pictures of ‘your better half.’ But days before her death, Overson shared a May 31 Facebook post about heartbreak and learning that ‘another person’s actions do not define your value,’ suggesting recent private struggles.
Responded one commentator, ‘This poor girl was screaming for help on all of her posts… I’m so sorry gorgeous RIP.’
Online fundraiser and vigil
Family members have launched an online fundraiser to support Overson’s three sons, ages 10, 8 and 3, citing the boys’ need for counseling, daily expenses and long-term stability after witnessing the violence.
On Monday, neighbors like Adrina Lara came together at a nearby park to show their respects for the three people who died.
‘This is a small town,’ Lara told KOIN 6 News. ‘We are very close and things like this are just not happening in our town. So that’s where the shock comes from.’
