An Albuquerque, New Mexico man has been charged with murder after stabbing a fellow guest at a birthday party in an unprovoked attack, authorities said.
Ernesto Martinez, 41, is alleged to have fatally stabbed the victim, Christopher Gallegos as the two men attended a birthday party, Saturday night, early Sunday morning.
Martinez, who was being held down by other guests told police he stabbed someone at the party, but could not remember who, or what led up to him stabbing the victim, who he agreed he got on well with.
‘Completely unprovoked attack’
The victim’s wife told police her husband was standing in the kitchen when Martinez walked up from behind, ‘reached across Christopher’s body’ and stabbed him, police said. She told police the incident was ‘completely unprovoked’ as the two men had been friendly toward one another throughout the evening, according to a criminal complaint.
The stabbing took place at a residence on the 3000 block of Kraft Court SW, with witnesses just on 11.30pm, Saturday night, with guests saying there had been no argument or confrontation between the two men before the fatal stabbing, KOAT reported.
Martinez later told police he was ‘100% sure I stabbed somebody,’ however, he could not recall who he stabbed or why he stabbed them. Martinez who agreed to speak with detectives without an attorney being present recalled being in possession of a folding knife in his hand, which he stated he regularly carried his pocket, according to ABQRAW.
Martinez mentioned he and the victim have always been friendly with each other and did not know why he would have stabbed the victim.
Once Martinez was arrested, a knife was found on the floor, the criminal complaint stated.
Following his arrest, Martinez received medical treatment, before being booked in the Metropolitan Detention Center and charged with first degree murder.
