John Heathco and Abby Lutz found dead vacationing at luxury Baja Mexican hotel resort, Hotel Rancho Pescadero. Carbon monoxide poisoning believed to be cause of death.
Disconcert has come to the fore following reports of two Americans found dead inside their luxury hotel room in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Tuesday night. Their deaths are believed to be the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The victims have been identified as John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 22, according to the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office. Lutz is from Newport Beach, California, the AG’s office said. Local police initially said both victims were in their mid-30s.
The bodies were found by paramedics and police around 9 p.m., local authorities told ABC News. Lutz was found deceased on the bed, while Heathco was found deceased in the shower. Abby worked as a nanny while John ran a health supplements website, the victims’ families stated.
Recurring gas inhalation deaths of US travelers
First responders entered the guests’ room at Hotel Rancho Pescadero, located in the seaside community of El Pescadero after receiving reports that the Americans were unconscious, police said.
The pair were pronounced dead at the scene.
The man and woman had been dead for about 10 or 11 hours when they were found, the attorney general’s office said. There were no signs of violence on their bodies, according to the AG’s office.
The suspected causes of death were inhalation of gas, which has happened to other Americans in Mexico in recent years. Previous episodes have been ascribed to improperly vented or leaky water heaters and stoves.
Recurring carbon monoxide deaths
The tragic discovery was made at the Hotel Rancho Pescadero, ABC News reported.
The hotel is a luxury Hyatt property.
The company did not immediately respond to an ABC News request for comment.
US officials could not comment on the case because of privacy concerns.
More information on the victims was not available Wednesday night.
Last October, three Americans were found dead at a rented apartment in Mexico, apparently from gas inhalation.
And in 2018, a gas leak in a water heater killed an Iowa couple and their two children at a resort in Tulum.
