Bronx High School of Science Fight Club: Disturbing video footage and a social media page, Savage Sessions point to students targeting and viciously bullying students.
A disturbing report has told of the existence of a Fight Club ritual at esteemed Bronx High School of Science, dating as far back as April, 2015 taking place and even being documented on Facebook under a private page, ‘Savage Sessions.’
The school known for its rigorous application process and spawning some of the most lauded and brightest pupils achieving coveted slots in society (including eight Nobel Prize winners, eight winners of the National Medal of Science and six Pulitzer Prize winners) is also it seems grooming the city’s best brawlers to boot.
Heard screaming in the background in one May 23, 2015 video cited by the nydailynews in an exclusive: ‘Kick his fxcking ass, brother!,’ ‘Clock him!’
The Bronx High School of Science Fight Club sessions have even heralded their own slot on Facebook, where more than three dozen videos — including 11 fight clips, one offering a slow-motion replay — were posted on the “Savage Season” private page for its 1,516 private members.
Needless to say response to what appears to be a hazing ritual has led to some parents rushing for the doors, with one parent telling, ‘I took my son out of the school after he told me about the videos.’
Added the mother: ‘It was not safe. It’s one of the best high schools in the country, and then you see the reality of what goes on in there. It’s insane. These kids are super-smart, but they have zero common sense.’
According to the tabloid, some of the fight videos it was given privy access to run as long as six minutes, with the fighters wearing boxing gloves, MMA-style mitts or brawling bare-fisted.
Many of the students watching use mobile phones to shoot their own videos as others stood in a circle, cheering or mocking the combatants.
Reiterated the mother soberly: ‘They need to stop this. What happens if a kid who gets hit in the head dies?’
Which raises the awkward question, do teachers and school administrators know about the fights and if so, why haven’t they put a stop to them?
Incredulously according to the mom, some of the brawls took place during school hours. The mother told of her son being bullied and targeted, with the brawls taking place at nearby Harris Field.
According to the mother, she first informed school officials about the fights four months ago, but administrators insisted they were powerless because the fights were in the park.
Responding the Education of Department in a statement today: ‘The non-school-related incidents took place last year and were reported to the NYPD.’
Added the Department: ‘officials take these reports very seriously and are continuing to monitor the situation.’
Confided one 17 year old senior, Jefe to the nydailynews, who reckoned the fights which attracted at times crowds of 100 students as being no big deal: ‘It’s a volunteer thing.’
Adding: ‘You do it for publicity. It gets you the laugh … I’ve fought in about two or three. It’s not a big deal. It makes you cool.’
The originators of the Fight Club type fights are said to be mostly seniors who graduated this past June — but some in the Class of 2017 are alleged to have maintained the ‘showdowns.’
Reiterated Jefe: ‘It’s mostly pushing and shoving,’
‘You don’t get bruised, really. You get caught in a mob mentality.’
Despite the senior’s claim, one of the videos according to the tabloid who was allowed access to some of the videos, tells of a bigger student in one video ‘pounding on a smaller kid who leaves the fight with a bloody lower lip.’
Other Bronx Science students have since laughed off (do you suppose???) questions about the fistfights, although the tabloid tells of the seniors being annoyed that word of the secret brawls having leaked.
But perhaps they needn’t be so annoyed with the matchups purportedly having been advertised on the web. A post from Sept. 29 showed a pair of would-be combatants pictured side by side over the tagline, ‘Alik vs. Izzy, Once in a Lifetime,’ notes the nydailynews.
Allegations of a nascent Fight Club hazing ritual having preeminence at the school is perhaps in keeping with what the nydailynews says is a ‘well-documented culture of bullying and hazing that dates back years.’
Welcome to become the next master of the Universe if you dare….
Asked to comment, Principal Jean Donahue who came on board in 2013 after previous scandals led to the exodus of then Principal Valerie Reidy following a track team hazing declined overtures for media comments.
Even more disconcerting, are indications on the Facebook page that the faculty were aware of the off-campus violence.
‘There are school deans on savage season we are currently working to circumvent this thank you for your patience,’ wrote one of the organizers.
Not presently understood is if students have any more upcoming fight lined up and perhaps most importantly what school administrators intend to do to address the calamity which threatens to rock the school’s already shaky reputation…?
