Janelle Foley a former school lunch lady and a married mother of four has admitted to repeatedly raping a 15 year old boy during his family’s holiday parties.
Pleading guilty to four counts of statutory child rape charges on Wednesday, the 36 year old woman was immediately sentenced to serve between 2.5 to 4.5 years prison time at Framingham, a Norfolk County, Massachusetts correctional facility for the first count.
Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said Folk will serve five years’ probation for the remaining three counts.
The abuse of the boy came after Foley targeted the son of her friend, the boy’s mother.
Offered Morrissey according to a report via the The Boston Herald: ‘We felt a state prison sentence was appropriate in this case’.
Prior to her guilty plea, Janelle Foley had been scheduled to appear in court later this week for the commencement of trial. But the plea led to Morrissey expressing relief.
Told the DA: ‘We were ready to go to trial. I am relieved for the victim in this case that the convictions were secured without needing to testify at trial.’
As part of her sentencing, Foley will also be required to register as a sex offender and will not be permitted to have unsupervised contact with any children under the age of 18, except her own.
According to The Patriot Ledger, Janelle Foley was accused of sexually assaulting the 15-year-old boy during parties at his family’s home and was indicted in March 2014.
Assistant Norfolk District Attorney Danielle Piccarini said during a 2014 court hearing that Foley sexually assaulted the teen during Thanksgiving and New Year’s parties in his home.
In her defense, Foley’s attorney claimed his client had been plagued by mental health and substance abuse issues.
The victim was not a student where she worked in the cafeteria at Weymouth Middle School for a little over two years prior to the charges.
Since her 2014 indictment, Foley had been released on $5,000 bail and tracked by GPS.
Since the woman’s sentencing, debate has ensued as to whether Janelle Foley’s punishment was appropriately virulent, as some have wondered how much more punitive the sentence would have been had the gender of the victim and sexual predator been reversed.
Which is to wonder why are female sexual predators who prey on their victims so often remiss to seek out victims, perhaps in the knowledge that society doesn’t judge them aggressors. A point of view that may not sit well with one emotionally and psychologically afflicted teen and his family.
And then there was this comment on the web that made me wonder. See what you think?
Hey … same crime different gender. If she was a guy we’d all be screwering him and happy to call him a low life degenerate. But when it’s a woman who tends to her looks, a lot of you on BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum want to look away.
It’s still an adult manipulating a child for sexual gratification. Rules is rules.
I only wish that there was more help easily accessible for the perpetrators. My strong hunch is that she may have gone through something similar as a child. It’s a from of mental illness passed from generation to generation. Whether it’s the basketball coach, the local Parish priest, or the hot school teacher, you do the crime … you do the time, unless of course you have big $$$$.
