A 16 year old Maldivian girl who has confessed to having sex with an older man has been ordered to face 100 lashes and 8 months house arrest after ‘confessing’ to having sex with a 29 year old man.
The charges instigated by the girl’s family also led to the man being found guilty of having sex with a minor and him receiving a ten year jail sentence.
Because she is still a minor the court has implemented that her punishment wont be carried out until she becomes an adult.
sundaily: The court ruling came 10 months after UN Human Rights chief Navi Pillay urged the Maldives to stop publicly flogging women for having extra-marital sex.
Pillay noted during a visit to the country that the Maldives had progressed in safeguarding the rights of its 330,000 Sunni Muslims, but more needed to be done to protect women.
Flogging is normally handed down as a punishment by village chiefs who also act as local judges. A cane is used.
Although one should be pleased that the courts have addressed justice against the offending man, one has to wonder why women are still being punished and to some degree being held accountable for the behavior of their perpetrators which suggests an oppressive attitude towards women who must continue tolerating the whims of men and the nuanced code of a faith that limits the freedom and rights of women.
Then there was this comment by one reader as well:
disgraceful! We may not be as bad as Maldives but there are sections of India’s society which is also determined to take us back to the stone age…people who indulge in moral policing and people who flog women are cut from the same cloth.
The Maldives, better known as a luxury tourist destination, adopted multi-party democracy in 2008, but faced political unrest leading to the resignation of the first elected president, Mohamed Nasheed, in February.
