According to this article, a striking number of college students and grads are turning to the world’s oldest profession in order to pay back otherwise insurmountable college loans. Attractive young women find older, richer and/or more powerful men online, and sleep with them in exchange for much-needed money.
Let’s not beat around the bush: this is prostitution. Money is being exchanged for sex. It is that simple. A girl calling herself Jennifer lists the differences between herself and a prostitute, and it’s an embarrassingly transparent case of protesting too much.
Jennifer doesn’t label what she’s doing as prostitution. “I’m not a whore. Whores are paid by the hour, can have a high volume of clients in a given day, and it’s based on money, not on who the individual actually is. There’s no feeling involved and the entire interaction revolves around a sexual act,” says Jennifer, who wears a $300 strapless dress purchased with money from her most recent conquest. The rest of the money, she says, went towards paying down her student loans.
“My situation is different in a number of different ways. First of all, I don’t engage with a high volume of people, instead choosing one or two men I actually like spending time with and have decided to develop a friendship with them. And while sex is involved, the focus is on providing friendship. It’s not only about getting paid.”
My stance on this, however, is ‘So What?’ Women are using a perfectly understandable, working rate of exchange (the oldest one there is) to get what they need with what they have.
This brief flurry of attention will no doubt be exploited by moral supremacists, insisting that what’s happening to these girls is a tragedy, etc. etc.
No. No it is not a tragedy. I have a serious problem with anyone who thinks that sex between two consenting adults isn’t awesome. (Note that it’s ‘two consenting adults’. Not two thrilled, couldn’t-be-happier-about-this adults.)
Sex is good. Sex is legal. Sex is healthy. Sex is fun. Taking the right precautions, sex can be virtually risk-free.
The women that build profiles on sites like this one, this one right here, know precisely what they’re getting into. “This isn’t really how I pictured myself making money,” they might think. Big deal. Lots of people do lots of things they don’t feel like doing for money. It’s called Work.
Ladies? Ladies about whom this article was written? Please, please don’t use this as an excuse to feel bad about yourself. You’re making a difficult decision, but you’re also taking responsibility for your needs. Hell, my own worries about the economy would be considerably quieter if I could get paid to entertain the right Sugar Mama.
Don’t jump down my throat—I’m only half-kidding. No. No I don’t know what it’s like to sleep with someone for money. I don’t know what you’re feeling or thinking as you screw your courage to the sticking point and just make it happen. The world of prostitution is scarcely glamorized, and scarcely glamorized well.
On the bright side? At least you have your pick of clientele, and you know you’ll be well-paid. They can afford to splurge. They choose to splurge on you. Be smart, be careful, and be pragmatic about the whole thing.
Things could be a whole lot worse. All you have to manage to do is to live with yourself, but don’t we all?
