Dance, flamenco in particular, has long been a favorite subject of photographers. It’s almost ironic how an art form that is inherently unmoving can be so obsessed with a form that is truly rooted in movement as expression. This exhibition, however, justifies the fascination. Freezing the motion of dance in photography not only shines light on intricacies that are otherwise impossible to view in isolation, it also superimposes a point of view onto the scene.

See the perspectives of Larrain and fellow featured artists (including Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Robert Capra, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, and more) on display until April 1, 2010, at the Aperture Gallery in Chelsea. To see Gilles Larrain perform flamenco guitar and get a glimpse inside the legendary photographer’s studio and home, visit ArtSalonParty.org for information on the next gathering.
