Do all models make a lot of money?

SCV: How old were you when you first started modeling?

SC: I was 16. Actually to be honest with you I had no idea what modeling was about. I had been training as a ballerina (to tour with the Russian Ballet) when I suffered an injury which put me out. That’s when somebody turned around and said you should be a model.

SCV: And it happened like that?

SC: Actually it didn’t just happen like that. I first sent out some pictures and nobody got back to me. See the thing you have to realize in this industry is that people wont do anything with you unless you come referred or already represented.

SCV: It sounds like a catch 22 situation. So what happened?

SC: I got introduced to an agency that flew me out to Los Angeles where I eventually ended up winning the the IMTA model of the year. That then set me up to get a contract with Next management. I then came to NYC and the minute I turned 18 I went to Japan on a modeling contract that paid something like $10 000 for a month’s work.

SCV: What was that like? Being on your own as a young person in a foreign culture.

SC: Yeah, I really enjoyed it, the experiences, the people you got to meet. But you have to understand it’s all very organized in Japan. Everything is planned out for you before you even arrive.

SCV: And you lived with other girls?

SC: My room mate was 14 and she came with her mother. Her mother was a real ‘bitch.’ Always very rude.

SCV: So I take it you guys didn’t like each other.

SC: Well that’s the thing, all the girls you see out eventually become your extended family. You learn how to cook together, fend together, how to catch the metro in a foreign country and of course work together. It’s inevitable that you all bond.

SCV: But where there instances where you hated the new it girl?
