Illma Gore beaten Donald Trump supporter: How one artist has resolved to stand her ground after an attack after her work caused dissent.
Australian artist Illma Gore has told of being ‘punched’ by a Donald Trump supporter in Los Angeles after calls to have a nude portrait of the outspoken GOP Presidential contender she’d painted withdrawn from a London exhibit.
The portrait, ironically titled, ‘Make America Great Again,’ the battle cry of the Republican contender had in recent weeks led to wide criticism after Gore chose to portray Trump in a less than flattering full frontal depiction, wearing nothing more than a bracelet.
According to a post on instagram, Illma Gore told of being punched in the face Friday by a man getting out of a car and shouting , ‘Trump 2016!’.
The assault led to Gore reproducing a series of photos (talk about dying for your art…) showing the extent of the Australian’s disturbing injuries, with a black eye.
Wrote Gore on Facebook: ‘Though I encourage passion, opinion and emotion, especially though art, I think violence is disgusting. To live in a place where Facebook has given my address to an anonymous third party makes me feel like I am homeless again. This type of violence makes creatives feel like we live in a world where our individual creative input isn’t safe. I am sad that this is the state of our America right now. I am sad that Trump, and many of his supporters, don’t find words enough to express their opinions – they need walls, waterboarding and punches. @realdonaldtrump Please stop glamorizing and perpetuating violence. Make America Decent Again! #makeamericadecentagain No, they have not been caught, and the men drove off laughing. A detailed police report has been filed.’
The attack according to Gore happened after returning to LA from London, after taking the portrait to Mayfair’s Maddox Gallery where it is now on display. The attack comes after Gore had been allegedly served with a suit from Trump’s camp threatening legal action if the work came to be sold. At present, Maddox Gallery is asking $1m.
Told the artist via the independent recently: ‘People put so much power into what genitals should be or look like. If you take away this man’s face for example, you get a painting of a typical body figure you will learn in any fine arts course,’
‘But once you put Donald Trumps face on the body, it leaves a specific connotation to it all, dependent on whether you like him or not. It really shouldn’t matter. Basically you can be a massive p***k despite what is in your pants!’
Countered Illma Gore whether she’d capitulate and take down the art work: ‘It is my art and I stand by it,’
‘Plus anyone who is afraid of a fictional penis is not scary to me.’
The attack comes after Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges in March after grabbing a female reporter trying to pose a question. The Florida State Attorney declined to prosecute.
Despite or perhaps in spite of the pervasive lopsided media attention, Trump continues to appeal across the heartland.
And then there were these reactions on the web that made me wonder, see what you think?
