Editor of Jackie Mag apologizes to Rihanna for calling her the ultimate ‘niggabitch.’
The Dutch think Rihanna is being too sensitive while Rihanna thinks Dutch fashion magazine ‘Jackie‘ editor in chief Eva Hoeke (who has gone on to resign or was she forced to resign?) is a denigration to the evolution of human rights…
Here’s an interesting dilemma, a Dutch magazine in an effort to drive home the edgy dispositions of how young girls can dress chooses to reference popular singer Rihanna, but by trying to affect an attitude of street cred it instead finds itself being accused of acting in bad taste.
This is what the journal printed that got entertainer Rihanna all riled up:
(as translated by parlourmag): “She has street cred, she has a ghetto ass and she has a golden throat. Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n***abitch and displays that gladly, and for her that means: what’s on can come off.”
This in turn is what Rihanna tweeted:
I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000′s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race! That’s your contribution to this world! To encourage segregation, to mislead the future leaders to act in the past! You put two words together, with the intent of abasement, that made no sense…”NIGGA BITCH”?!….Well with all respect, on behalf of my race, here are my two words for you…FUCK YOU!!!
Which presses the question, did Rihanna over react as some individuals in Holland are suggesting, did she misinterpret the flavor of the article which tried to affect the vernacular of an edgy street cred ethos or could it be that the Dutch have a hard time understanding that sometimes despite their aspirations to be down are in some way reinforcing negative stereotypes which just might be an easy thing to do when you are racist to begin with.
Either way there are a few things to consider, no matter how offended Rihanna appears, she rarely shirks when it comes to shocking us with her outfits, lyrics or dispositions, but then again maybe because she’s an entertainer we’re willing to not mind when she trolls around like a slutty skimpy vixen (I suppose one is to believe that makes the music sound better?) which has the effect of sublimaly reinforcing a racy promiscuous sexuality to young women who aspire to emulate her.
On the other hand with respect to the magazine, it too is in the business of entertaining and if writing about unknowns would generate more revenue and face branding than trust me they would do it, but since being controversial and edgy is the way to ensure someone mentions your name 45 times before your first tea break it acts to keep you relevant, which is something every entertainer and entertainment provider appreciates.
Then again if we look at the history of Holland, one will see that for many years it abetted racism in South Africa where it was a colonial ruler, never mind the treatment of indigenous tribes in Indonesia who were made virtual slaves. Even in recent times disturbing trends with respect to individuals who migrate to the country who often happen to be dark skinned, dress and act differently from themselves, aspire to different religious values have led to many violent and deadly clashes. In fact demands to curtail immigration and force a greater scrutiny with respect to such individuals has become the over riding mantra of far right wing political parties who have steadily seen their fan base grow.
Ultimately this is what Jackie posted on their facebook wall:
“First: thanks for all your responses. We are of course very fed up over this and especially very shocked. However I’m glad that we’re engaging in a dialogue on this page — not everybody does that. Thanks for this. Other than that I can be brief about this: this should have never happened. Period,”
Continues the statement: “While the author meant no harm — the title of the article was intended as a joke — it was a bad joke, to say the least. And that slipped through my, the editor-in-chief’s, fingers. Stupid, painful and sucks for all concerned.”
“The author has been addressed on it, and now I can only ensure that these terms will no longer end up in the magazine. Furthermore I hope that you all believe there was absolutely no racist motive behind the choice of words. It was stupid, it was naive to think that this was an acceptable form of slang — you hear it all the time on tv and radio, then your idea of what is normal apparently shifts — but it was especially misguided: there was no malice behind it.”
Ultimately Rihanna got to get something off her chest, Jackie’s editor in chief, Eva Hoeke was momentarily red faced for perceived or actual discretions and probably got to bring new readers to the journal whilst somewhere down the street some kid has just spent the last 2 hours calling another kid a nigga bitch and I’m willing to bet my life savings you didn’t even flinch when you walked past the two little bitches.
