Andrew “Sketchy Andy” Lewis and second person killed in Moab, Utah BASE jumping accident in Grand County in what is thought to be commercial outing.

At what cost a thrill…? A BASE jumping incident over the weekend near Moab, Utah has led to the death of a well-known stunt performer/outdoor adventure guide and second man. 

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said the two extreme sports enthusiasts were jumping in the remote area of Mineral Bottom. Both victims died from their injuries at the scene.

Authorities identified one of the victims as Andrew ‘Andy’ Lewis, the owner and operator of BASE Jump Moab, a local guiding company. He was also known in the extreme sports community as Sketchy Andy.’

Commercial outing cited

The other victim’s name was not released, but officials said he was 50 years old according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office

The sheriff’s office confirmed the two men died during a tandem BASE jump, in which a passenger is harnessed to an experienced jumper and the pair descends together on one parachute. The office has not said whether the jump was a commercial outing.

‘The Grand County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and all those affected by this tragic incident,’ the office stated in a release according to the Moab Sun news.

Andrew Lewis, had accomplished over 4,000 jumps, according to the Moab Swingers website.

‘(Lewis) performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Madonna, judged international slackline competitions and travels the globe as a performer and elite athlete,’ the website said.

No further information in the case of the alleged accident was shared. 

Moab’s red-rock cliffs, including the area around Mineral Bottom, have long drawn BASE jumpers from around the world.
