The suspect in Friday’s Midland, Texas shooting which led to one person killed and 10 injured was identified as an individual wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer two days earlier.
Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, Tx., started firing at officers and bystanders in Midland circa 8.a, before barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic building.
Officers had responded to reports of an active shooter in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. DPS and other responding officers immediately established a perimeter around the building to mitigate the threat.
Gunman was wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer
Villarreal was declared deceased inside the building at approximately 12:30 Thursday afternoon, bringing the incident to an end. DPS confirmed one person dying, and 10 others injured. No law enforcement officers were injured.
Investigators say Villarreal was already wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday, KBST reported.
On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at approximately 11:23 p.m., Midland Police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 4800 block of Anetta. The driver fled for several blocks before stopping in the 4700 block of Comanche. He then exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds from a rifle at the officer.
The officer returned fire, but the suspect fled the scene in the vehicle. The vehicle was later located abandoned a short distance away. Despite an intensive search, the suspect was not found. The officer was not injured.

Active investigation underway
At the request of MPD, the Texas Rangers are investigating Friday’s standoff incident, with the shooting now an active investigation.
Victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital. Concerned family members can contact the Family Reunification Center at 432-631-4689.
The Texas Rangers ask that anyone with information related to the incident please come forward. Drivers are asked to please find alternate routes around the area as authorities are still on the scene.
West Wall Street/Business 20 from the intersection of Fasken Road, across from Cavender Subaru, to Loop 250 in Midland, is expected to remain closed for the next 24 – 48 hours.
