An Iowa high school senior is reported to have died just hours after receiving her graduation diploma after being involved in a traffic collision.
Ashlin Knuth, 18, of Ottumwa, Iowa was killed following a two-vehicle crash over the weekend according to authorities.
The incident happened at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Roemer Avenue, Ottumwa Police Department said in a statement.
Knuth’s mom had posted graduation photos prior to fatal crash later that evening
Investigators say Knuth was driving a 2005 Mini Cooper westbound on Roemer Avenue when her vehicle crashed with a northbound 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by 21-year-old driver, Nathaniel Hart.
Emergency crews from the Ottumwa Fire Department and ORMICS worked to remove Knuth and an 18-year-old male passenger from the car. Both were taken to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment.
Police said 21-year-old driver was not injured. Knuth later died from injuries suffered in the crash, WAVE3 reported.
The tragedy followed Ottumwa high school which Knuth had attended holding its graduation ceremony earlier that same day.
‘She was a part of the Ottumwa High School class of 2026 and had walked at the graduation ceremony earlier in the day,’ stated Knuth’s obituary.
The tragedy came hours after Knuths mom had posted graduation photos with five words: ‘She did it!! So proud of you Ashlin!!’
