104-page anti-capitalist manifesto
The shooting unfolded around midday, according to police, who responded after an eyewitness called in to report a ‘gun sticking out of a window’ and shots fired.
Videos of the incident show the suspected shooter wearing military style gear and holding a long gun. Police said they believed he was acting alone.
Initial reports told of the shooter hailing from Lethbridge, Alberta and a philosophy student at The University of Lethbridge.
A 104-page document purportedly linked to the shooter has been circulating on social media in the aftermath of the attack. The document a purported ‘anti-capitalist’ manifesto linked the alleged suspect to incel culture.
‘Incel’ (involuntary celibate) culture is an online subculture of primarily heterosexual men who express frustration over their inability to find romantic or sexual partners. It is characterized by pervasive misogyny, a deep sense of victimhood, and, in its more extreme corners, the endorsement of violence against women.
Noted a preamble: ‘This work delivers an explanation of the very peculiar and ghastly state of things that the western world has found itself in, especially regarding the situation of terrible loneliness, isolation and social degradation that is now a stark reality for many men of varying ages across our societies.’
Montreal shooting motive unclear
An official speaking on condition of anonymity revealed details about the manifesto allegedly found in Seth Scott Hatfield’s possession.
The official claimed that the manifesto detailed the suspect’s links to ‘involuntary celibacy’, a common feature of the incel ideology. It also allegedly contained warnings to police departments across Canada about similar attacks to the one that took place in Montreal.
‘A lot of people are being recruited, young people,’ Montreal’s Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said according to the Hindustantimes.
‘They are not on the street, they are in a difference space, which is much harder to control. That’s something that we’re going to have to be working on with the Montreal police in the future.’
She, however, did not confirm anything on the suspect’s alleged link to incel culture or around the motive behind the shooting or why the shooter chose to launch his attack in Montreal.
Authorities continue to investigate.
