Georgia prosecutors have dropped all criminal charges against the teenage driver who ran over North Hall High School teacher Jason Hughes during a toilet paper prank that turned fatal outside the educator’s home, calling the case a ‘tragic accident’ that does not warrant prosecution.

Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh announced Friday that charges against 18-year-old, Jayden Ryan Wallace, including first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, have been dismissed, along with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and littering against four other 18-year-old students. Darragh said he gave ‘great deference’ to Hughes’ family, who had publicly urged authorities not to pursue the case.

Gainesville teacher had encouraged and was willing participant of prank ritual

Hughes, 40, a math teacher and coach at North Hall High School, died March 6 after students went to his Gainesville home late that night to roll his trees with toilet paper as part of an ongoing ‘ prank war,’ and something that the educator had been looking forward to as a right of passage and bonding with his beloved students.

As the teens ran back to two vehicles to leave, Hughes came outside, slipped in the rain and fell into the road, only to be struck by a pickup truck driven by Wallace as the students turned to drive off after the prank according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

The teenagers stayed at the scene and tried to render aid until paramedics arrived, but Hughes was later pronounced dead at a hospital. His relatives have repeatedly described the incident as a heartbreaking accident and said Hughes knew about the prank and had been ‘excited’ to catch his students in the act.

Tragedy led to debate whether charges be dropped

In a statement through their attorney earlier this week, Wallace and his family called Hughes a mentor and promised to honor his memory, expressing ‘deepest sorrow and sincerest apology’ to the Hughes family.

The case for dropping charges against the teens had divided the internet, with many demanding that the law and justice be upheld while many also noting that the incident was a tragic accident with the teacher’s own blessing who sought kindred connection with his students.

Ironically the tragedy happened just hours before school officials warning that the yearly prank war was in danger of going ‘too far.’
