A North Carolina woman has been charged with the ‘blunt force trauma’ death of her 4 year old niece after the child coming to stay with her last month. Notice of the girl’s death came after police were called to a residence in Cabarrus County earlier this week.
Vanity Rubystine Williams, 31, was charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse, following her arrest earlier this week according to the Kannapolis Police Department.
On Tuesday shortly before midnight, officers were called to the 1600 block of Old Rivers Road following reports of a non responsive girl, Queens City News reported.
Grandmother shares disturbing details over 4 year old girl’s death
The girl, Stormy, 4, was staying with Williams, who was her aunt, since October and had been in her care at the time of her death.
Police arrested Williams on Thursday, initially charging her with one count of felony child abuse. However, she was further charged with first degree murder on Friday after police received a preliminary autopsy from the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office indicating serious bodily injury.
Stormy’s family said she died of blunt-force trauma, WCNC reported.
Not immediately clear is how the 4 year old girl had come to stay with the relative and the whereabouts of her parents.
While police declined to state what led up to the girl’s death, the child’s grandmother offered more insight, alluding to a dubious account the aunt had offered police.
Her grandmother, Tia Sanders, speaking to Channel 9 said she was heartbroken that she won’t be able to see Stormy grow up.
‘I guess she was running, and she hit her eye on a table,’
‘I’m coping, but it’s hurting so bad that it’s not even words that can describe the fact that I will never get to see my granddaughter get to kindergarten,’ Sanders said. ‘I won’t get to see her have another birthday. I won’t get to see her do anything else, hear her laugh, hear her joke … nothing.’
‘I had a relationship with Vanity growing up as a child. She would come to the house because I had just had my son, Stormy’s dad,’ Sanders added.
She said she thought the excuse Williams gave to investigators didn’t add up.
‘I guess she was running, and she hit her eye on a table,’ Sanders recalled.
But there was more.
‘Even if you didn’t do it or cause it or whatever the case may be, you’re going to call the police,’ Sanders said. ‘You have a car; you’re going to take her to the hospital. You went upstairs and laid down like you didn’t care. So that makes me feel like you never cared about her.’
Court records showed Vanity Williams was not authorized for bond and will have a first appearance in court set for Monday, Nov. 25.
