Fabian ‘Fa’ Guzman biological male self identifying as non binary kicked out of sorority claims being discriminated against and launches petition to be re included.

And it continues. A biological male self identifying as non-binary has claimed being discriminated against after they were kicked out of a sorority.

Fabian ‘Fa’ Guzman was a member of the Chi Omega sorority chapter at St. Lawrence University in New York until he received an email from the private school’s national headquarters on June 2 stating that his membership was being revoked.

The national chapter of Chi Omega had been investigating the honor student’s membership and ultimately determined that it violated their criteria for members on account of Guzmán being assigned as male at birth along with not exclusively identifying as female.

@fantana28 This show is one of my favs and seeing this scene almost made me cry. We need to talk about this! Non-binary and Trans individuals deserve to be seen and acknowledged in Greek Life! Thank you #TheSexLifeofCollegeGirls and #HBOMax for doing this!

Define gender? Define self identify? Define inclusion?

‘The selection criteria in the policy on membership includes ‘females and individuals identifying as women,’ which, by the chapter’s own understanding and your indication throughout the process, it is clear you did not meet the criteria at the time of your joining,’ the email, which was obtained by the 19th News, stated.

Guzmán took to social media to broadcast the issue and posted a nearly six-minute video to TikTok explaining his reaction, decrying the national membership as transphobic along with reinforcing what they decried as ‘dangerous stereotypes’ of what a sorority girl should be.

‘I went into mental distress, I actually missed my graduation because I was not feeling mentally stable to just stay,’ the non binary student said in the video (see directly below).

Adding, ‘My heart, it’s broken. It’s really broken.’

‘I can just see how there’s a reinforcement of the stereotypical style of how and who a sorority girl should be and how she should look like,’ Guzmán stated in the video. ‘Who’s saying that a sorority girl has to use she/her pronouns? Like we have non-binary members that can use she/they, they/them, and I was one of them and I feel extremely betrayed by my own sisters.’

Is the public ready to embrace all inclusivity?

After officially pledging in the fall of 2022, the first-generation college student thrived in the sorority and was quickly chosen to be the chapter’s recruitment chair for the upcoming fall semester.

Guzmán’s success at breaking barriers and succeeding as a leader on campus caught the attention of the university which wanted to write a feature about their sorority membership for the alumni magazine.

But it was not to be.

According to the ex-sorority sister, Chi Omega’s national office was afraid of the publicity in an increasingly polarizing time in which LGBTQ+ communities are under attack from ‘anti-woke’ and major brands have faced backlash for partnering with anyone who is not straight and cisgender.

Resolute and in solidarity with their former sorority member, the Chi Omega sorority in a statement given to The 19th, stated the sorority is ‘committed to providing opportunities for friendship, personal growth, and development amongst women from a variety of backgrounds who live and reflect the values of Chi Omega.’

Which is to wonder: Define what it means to be a woman? Define transperson who identifies as their non assigned gender at birth without necessarily having made the compete crossover.

Never mind demanding the general public be forced to accept those members of society who self identify in a way that the rest of the world has yet to caught up to or necessarily are ready to embrace… or accept.

Guzman come Monday launched a Change.org petition demanding Chi Omega reinstate their membership as their chapter sisters are all in support of them being a member. The petition to date has gathered 579 signatures.
