Jeremy Richman Sandy Hook father commits suicide: What led to the father of slain child, Avielle Richman taking his own life in Newtown, Connecticut town hall?
Jeremy Richman, the 49-year-old dad of 6 year old Avielle Richman, was found dead outside Edmond Town Hall — a white clapboard structure that sits directly in the center of the New England town — about 7 a.m. Monday, police said.
‘The death appears to be a suicide, but police will not disclose the method or any other details of the death, only to state the death does not to appear to be suspicious,’ Newtown police said on the department’s Facebook page.
‘This is a heartbreaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole, the police department’s prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time,’ Lt. Aaron Bahamonde said in the statement.
The suicide came days after two Parkland, Fla., school shooting survivors killed themselves, with suicide prevention experts urging troubled individuals to seek help.
Richman had an office in the Edmond Town Hall — a former municipal building that now houses a movie theater and event space — as the founder of the ‘Avielle Foundation,’ a non-profit whose goal was to advance brain research into the roots of violence.
The office of the chief medical examiner is investigating the exact cause of death, police said.
Richman had an office at the 45 Main St. building where his body was discovered.
He was reportedly found in a stage area undergoing renovations, according to The Newtown Bee.
Richman was a neuropharmacologist with more than 20 years of experience researching various ailments, such as diabetes and kidney disease. He enjoyed rock climbing and teaching martial arts, according to the Avielle Foundation’s website.
Of note, Richman and his wife were among the families who sued Infowars founder Alex Jones, who repeatedly alleged that the massacre, which also claimed the lives of six school staffers, was a hoax orchestrated up by the government.
