During proceedings at a Salt Lake County Court on Thursday, prosecutors told that the dance teacher had carried out an illicit affair for at least five months in late 2014 with a 17-year-old student from the studio which she ran and owned.
She was going through a divorce at the time, and her suspicious husband hired a private investigator who caught the mother of three during a Nov. 28, 2014 hook up with the underage teen.
The dance instructor and the minor were under a blanket with ‘their clothes strewn about the floor’ when the investigator, camera in hand, walked in on them, authorities said.
According to a report via the Deseret News Telford had allegedly groomed the boy, buying him gifts and paying his way for a dance competition at Disneyland leading up to their eventual relationship.
Prosecutors said the teacher would pick up the boy in the middle of the night, taking him to a church parking lot where they engaged in sex.
The teen told cops he’d had sex with Telford seven times, usually at her home but also at her parent’s house and a couple of times in a car.
Telford was originally charged with seven counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor but pleaded guilty to just one as part of a plea deal.
The jazz dancer now faces a maximum of five years in prison when she’s sentenced in August.
Laws regarding the age of consent in Utah state ‘no person under the age of 18, male or female, can legally consent to sex with a person who is more than 10 years older than the minor.’
