Triumph at Hearst Tower Follows Primrose Live

Talking with Jim Dale was like being served a warm tray of chocolate chip cookies. His voice is comfort food for the soul. Dale on his role as master of ceremonies that night: “It’s a Monday night. I can’t say no to anything.” Joking aside, Dale confessed that he’s been a friend of Walton’s for “many many years.” Marian Seldes, grand dame of Broadway, has been a friend of Tony’s just as long.

Producing the performance was the resplendent Margot Astrachan. “It’s enchanting. Taking the work from one medium to another in so short a time takes an extraordinary effort. The cast is amazing.”

Evening Primrose–intended for television– mostly worked as a staged reading in concert. The music was charming as some of Sondheim’s best, and the talents of Candice Bergen, Sean Palmer and Jessica Grove’ brought life to what was a simple (if bittersweet) fairy tale.
