The problem is more so that it was very mundane and mediocre—hardly a presentation that justified having a designer with so much associated “baggage” show at Fashion Week. The thought that the daughter of Islam Karimov might actually profit from selling overpriced blasé clothing reminiscent of an era of serious sociopolitical movement in U.S. to wealthy, uninformed Americans is almost as nauseating as it is ironic. (The irony of all this also hasn’t escaped the excellent S&V writer Anthony D Poerio, who has already written at length on this issue.)

What no doubt saved GULI from utter banality was the use of traditional Uzbek dress as inspiration. Ethnic fabrics from Uzbekistan such as Adras, Beqasam, Atlas, Han-atlas, Excelsior silk and Shoy, along with the use of ancient weaving techniques and handmade golden embroidery were the obvious bright spots in the show. These features on the several of the pieces in the collection were truly beautiful.

  1. She is shitty herself. Her dad is not that greedy at least. She had destroyed so many lives, some godfathers would be jealous.

  2. Malaikah, Jessie – if it was just a question of her having a murderous dictator for a dad, then you’re right that you can’t judge her for that on its own. However, she is known to be up to her neck in the horrendous Uzbek regime, and she is hugely corrupt personally. It stinks that she’s being given a platform in the West.
