When government officials are inclined to tell you that nervous twitch and convulsing stomach is all just in your mind.
This story kind of reminds us of George Orwell’s 1984, where a derelict society is told war is peace and peace is war. In the same ‘fun’ mold comes the charming but slightly disengaging story of a town called Jilin City in the outskirts of China.
For days workers have been falling sick, all 1200 of them in response to new chemical substances that were recently introduced to the textile mill. Adamant that it was all just a ‘psychological’ ploy, government officials have repeatedly asserted that the symptoms being experienced (feinting, dizziness and collective convulsions) is all in the employees heads, all 1200 of them that is.
Impressed with such outright bold assertions we have to momentarily wonder where the Chinese managed to master such amazing public relations control.
Any semblance to the way the media and government operates here of course could only be considered coincidental and ultimately conspiracy theory.
As George Orwell once said – nothing is true until ‘we ‘ tell you it’s true. We wonder…
