But for all their disappointment with the goodies, there’s no denying the beauty and integrity in the exhibit. I was a little skeptical about a fashion art exhibit- I believe that fashion can be art but I think an important part of it is not taking it seriously. And while this took itself more seriously than I was comfortable with, it was fascinating to see how beautiful these articles of clothing were. The suit jackets looked like they belonged on the perfect groom, but to the touch felt like they belonged in a children’s classroom.

It was beautiful, and it cast a unique light on our obsession with fashion but I question a) the intention behind the exhibit and b) the reaction.  To me, this piece shed light on the impermanence and frivolity of fashion, which is what I love about it. It showed that what we spend millions of dollars on, the industry that is more exclusive than almost any other, is far from indestructible and is full of foibles. But it may have been more significant to the artist. I may have been in the minority with that opinion. The press release says, “the artist considers how clothing can create a lifestyle and the multitude of decisions one faces each morning with the simple ritual of getting dressed.” I live in the fashion world, and I believe this to be true. But I like to think art should shed light on the more serious decisions we make. I spend a lot of time deciding what to wear in the morning, but aren’t the more important decisions humans make about things like humanity, depravity, love and honesty?

In conclusion, this exhibit was beautiful and shed a unique light on the fashion industry. But the fashion industry may be too puffed up too see it.
