Daniel Zhengyu Qin, Apple software engineer killed in Golden Gate Bridge boat crash as authorities investigate tragedy that left two others critically injured as fundraiser is launched for surviving wife and three young children.
A 35-year-old Apple software engineer died after a boat crashed into rocks beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in California last week.
Daniel Zhengyu Qin, of San Jose, was one of three individuals onboard the ’25 foot vessel’ when it struck the rocky shoreline near Lime Point around 6:10 a.m. on September 17. The boat was traveling at an estimated 25 knots when it slammed into the rocks, overturned and quickly sank.
Captain Ben Mechling, a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Master Mariner who was nearby noticed the boat heading toward an area where vessels would not typically travel. He began recording as the boat continued toward the shoreline and captured the crash on video (see below).
After witnessing the collision, Mechling contacted the U.S. Coast Guard. A large multi-agency rescue operation was launched, and crews located all three people who had been aboard the overturned vessel.
The three victims were taken to a Marin County hospital with serious injuries. Qin later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. The two other boaters survived but remain hospitalized the Fresno Bee reported.
Not immediately clear is what led to the vessel being out and about at the time of day and whether human or mechanical error was involved.
Qin worked as a software engineer for Apple and was also a husband and father of three young children, an 11-year-old son and two daughters, ages 9 and 3.
A GoFundme fundraiser has been established to help wife, Yao Deng pay for funeral expenses, everyday living costs and other emergency needs.
‘His sudden passing has left his wife and children facing an unimaginable loss, both emotionally and financially,’ the fundraiser stated.
The fundraiser described Qin as a kind, funny and generous person who was always willing to help those around him.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what happened before the boat struck the rocks beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
