A college athletic director in Oakland, California who starred in a Netflix documentary was shot on campus.
According to ABC7 News, John Beam – who is the Athletic Director at Laney College – was taken to hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound following a shooting incident near the school’s football field on Thursday.

Laney College shooting: suspect remains at large
The college was subsequently placed on lockdown before safety measures were lifted. The campus is now closed for the rest of the day.
Police are still searching for the suspect, who allegedly fled the scene after the shooting.
They are described as a male of unknown race, who was wearing dark clothing and a black hoodie.
Beam recently starred in the fifth series of Netflix’s college sports docu-series ‘Last Chance U’ back in 2020, when he was head coach of the school’s football team.
Before becoming athletic director at Laney College, Beam was the football coach at the school.
He retired from his coaching duties at the end of last season.
No known motive
A fixture in Bay Area football, Beam has spent decades developing local talent and turning Laney into a respected junior college program. He is regarded as a tough, outspoken mentor who emphasizes academics and discipline as much as on-field success.
The Oakland Fire Department has not released any information about Beam’s condition.
No known motive into the shooting was immediately known.
