A Massachusetts couple who died after falling through the ice on Cape Cod over the weekend was identified Tuesday by their children as Kit and Jerry Boucher.
Kit Boucher, 71, and Jerry Boucher, 72, were walking their black Labrador, Casey, along Bee’s River near First Encounter Beach, Saturday morning, circa 9 a.m, when the dog fell into the frigid water, prompting the couple to attempt a rescue, WJAR reported, citing Eastham police.
Woman dies after falling through Cape Cod ice in Eastham as missing husband feared dead
An officer responding to a report of a loose, wet dog in the parking lot, heard a woman screaming for help and found Kit in the river, police said.
While officers tried to pull her out, the ice gave way and both Kit and one officer became completely submerged, officials said. A second officer fell in up to his waist while trying to help, but both officers were pulled to safety and later evaluated at a hospital. Despite efforts by the Eastham Fire Department and the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team, Kit did not survive. Officials later surmised that the woman’s husband had remained unaccounted for and sought to desperately locate and rescue the man.
