A 16-year-old boy and two 19-year-old men were killed, police said. The injured ranged in age from 16 to 36-years-old after rival gangs allegedly firing at each other.

The chaos unfolded during an un-sanctioned monthly street takeover of modified sports cars attended by around 200 people.

Shared footage shows terrified revelers running and ducking for cover as shots are fired in the background.

Witnesses told the New York Times there was some kind of argument before shots were fired. One person reported seeing a man with an assault rifle-style weapon.

The Las Cruces Police Department were frantically working to identify a suspect or suspects, with no arrests made so far.

‘Las Cruces police and fire personnel were dispatched to the reports of gunfire and possible gunshot victims near the parking lot of Young Park, 850 S. Walnut St,’ police said in a released statement on Facebook.

‘Officers arrived and learned of multiple gunshot victims. Most were transported to local hospitals. Some were taken to University Medical Center of El Paso.’

A thorough examination of ballistic evidence determined that approximately 50 to 60 shell casings recovered at the scene were from handguns, with no casings found matching an AR-style rifle allegedly spotted during Friday’s incident, the Las Cruces Police Dept said during a press conference, Saturday morning.

Police responded to the call at 10:10 p.m. to investigate two groups of people that escalated into gunfire, Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story said at a Saturday morning news conference.

Unsanctioned car show meet leads to gun violence

‘This is a huge crime scene with lots of moving parts,’ Story said.

‘This horrendous, senseless act is a stark reminder of the blatant disregard the people of New Mexico have for the rule of law and order,’ Story said. ‘It’s also a reminder of the utter lack of fear of accountability in New Mexico. As angry as I am right now, this news conference will not be political. There will come a time to talk about the failures that led to this tragedy and so many others. Now is not that time.’

Angel Legaspy, 20, who had attended the meet, described his parked car being struck by a hail of bullets during the incident.

‘They just started shooting and they just started running around everybody,’ he told the New York Times, adding it was ‘like all over the place’.

‘This was a heinous act of violence that will leave our city morning,’ Mayor Johana Bencomo said. ‘As with all acts of gun violence in our city, my heart is broken for the victims and families impacted.’

Las Cruce police is being assisted by agents from the New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and rom the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

‘Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police immediately at (575) 526-0795,’ the force said.

‘Anyone trying to learn the status of a victim may call the same number.’

The park and surrounding roads remain closed on Saturday as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials continue to actively investigate the incident and are pursuing multiple leads.
