Michael Millett, Deland, Florida 8 year old boy riding bike stops to pet two loose dogs only to be mauled to death as Volusia County authorities seek to charge the dog owner over the child’s death.
An 8-year-old boy in central Florida died after he was attacked by two ‘loose’ dogs near the entrance of a subdivision. The tragedy follows the boy who was riding his bike stopping to pet the two dogs only to be mauled to death according to Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael Millett was attacked by the loose dogs Monday evening near Deland, Florida, located halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said during a press briefing.
He said the boy was riding his bike with a friend when he stopped to pet one of the dogs. That’s when the attack happened. Chitwood said he sustained 12 bites and had some broken bones. He believes it wasn’t long before he died.
Chitwood said the boy’s mom dove on top of the boy.
‘Here we have a mother who’s fighting evil and trying to revive her son,’ said Chitwood.
Nearby residents administered CPR to the boy and called 911, but they were unable to save him, the sheriff said.
The dogs were captured and were being held by the county’s Animal Services agency.
Sheriff Millet said one was a pit bull and the other a mixed breed.
‘Unfortunately, the owner has not signed over permission for humane euthanasia at this point, but that may be coming in the near future,’ said Angela Miedema, the Volusia County Animal Services director.
A joint investigation is underway between the sheriff’s office and animal services.

‘I don’t know what anyone can say to ease the immense pain this family is feeling tonight,’ Sheriff Chitwood said.
‘This is a tragedy beyond comprehension, especially for those of us who are parents and grandparents.’
Speaking to FOX35, the victim’s mother, Tiffani said she will never get the image of seeing her son being mauled out of her mind.
The boy’s family said ‘he was a ray of light and was always happy.’
Chitwood said the ultimate goal is to have the female dog owner, whose identity was not revealed, charged. He is working with the state attorney’s office and hopes she is, at minimum, charged with negligent homicide.
‘She needs to be held accountable,’ the official reiterated.
It is understood the dog owner had prior run ins with her dogs but was never officially held to account.
A GoFundme fundraiser for burial costs as of late Wednesday night had raised $38,900.
