Rose Chavis Indianapolis mother leaves paralyzed daughter with disabilities on the floor after falling out of bed for 7 days after refusing to assist victim, insisting she ‘get up on her own.’ Responding officers arrived a week later, only to find a sordid scene.
An Indianapolis woman is accused of having refused to pick up her partially paralyzed ‘adult’ daughter suffering from cerebral palsy off the floor when she fell from her bed, causing the daughter to remain there for a week.
Rose Chavis, 75, of Marion County upon her arrest earlier this week was charged with six counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, each a Level 5 felony along with one count of intimidation according to WTHR.
According to court documents, the daughter fell on the floor, between a bed and a wall at home, only for the 40 year old paralyzed victim to lie on the floor for a whole week on account of Chavis demanding she ‘get up on her own.’
Maggots found in victim’s open wounds
A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said that the victim, ‘diagnosed with Cerebral palsy, paralysis on the left side’ and having ‘other physical/mental impairments’ that make her an ‘endangered adult’ under the law, fell out of bed in September and was not helped for a whole week, even though her mother and caregiver was allegedly ‘aware’ of the fall.
It wasn’t until one week later on September 13th that a call was made to authorities alleging neglect at the home that the paralysed victim was at last assisted. Until that time the un-named 40 year old had no choice but to fend for her own, only to be discovered in a sordid manner.
Court documents stated the victim had been urinating and defecating on herself, FOX59 reported.
Court documents stated that when first respondents rolled the victim on her side, the victim’s skin ripped from her body, leaving a large surface area open wound.
Additional notes included, ‘maggots were noted in some of the wounds which were cleaned by nursing staff.’
The victim told first respondents that Chavis ‘stated she would not call 911… because she wanted (the daughter) to ‘get up on her own.’ During the one week that the paralysed victim laid on the floor in her own human waste, the mother continued to bring her daughter food, fluids and her medication, the victim stated.

‘Warned not to call the ambulance…’
But there’s more.
Court documents revealed the 911 caller was the paralysed daughter herself who was eventually able to reach her cellphone with a coat hanger and call for outside assistance.
During the 911 call, the documents state that the daughter said that she had been on the floor for seven days while her mother was downstairs.
During police questioning, Chavis said her daughter was ‘warned not to call the ambulance because (she called) them too many times in the past.’ Chavis said that even though her daughter needed help, Chavis was not able to help her get up.
‘When (officers) asked if (the daughter) had been on the floor for seven days, (Chavis) stated she did not know if (the daughter) had been on the floor for seven days, but it was more than one day,’ court documents stated. ‘(Chavis) stated that she attempted to help (her daughter) get up off the floor and take her to the hospital. She made several attempts over several days to get (her daughter) off the floor.’
Chavis’ initial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7. The court set a bond for Chavis at $10,000 surety.
