16 year old gunman was known to local authorities
The shooting happened at 12:36 p.m. inside a first-floor bathroom at Joppatowne High School after a fight breaking out between the two boys. At the time one of the boys allegedly pulled a gun and shot the other who later died.
The victim was air-lifted from the baseball field to an area hospital where Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler during a Friday press conference said the boy was in serious condition at that time. The boy later died at the hospital.
Gahler identified the victim as Waren Curtis Grant, 15 of Edgewood.
The suspect has not yet been identified due to his age, but Gahler said once they charge him as an adult, they will publicly release his name.
The official told of the 16-year-old suspect initially fleeing the school after the shooting before he was apprehended ‘within minutes’ at a nearby apartment complex. However, the weapon used in the crime has yet to be recovered.
Gahler said the 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody within minutes of the shooting thanks to ‘community members.’ Gahler did not say whether or not those community members were other students.
Video shared on social media captured the immediately aftermath, with astonished classmates heard crying and wailing, ‘Somebody shot him?’ over and over.

After the shooting, Gahler said the suspect left the bathroom and the school. People in the school brought the victim out of the bathroom into the hallway where he was attended to by school nurses.
Gahler said his deputies arrived at the school within two minutes of the shooting, and within 15 minutes, more than 100 officers were at the school from various agencies. Paramedics arrived within minutes of the shooting.
Right now, Gahler said they believe only one shot was fired.
The sheriff’s office has consulted with the State Attorney’s Office, and they believe they have enough evidence to charge the 16-year-old. They have not been able to interview the suspect yet due to Maryland law, the sheriff said.
‘A tragic day four days into the school year,’ Gahler said. ‘We’re all familiar with the horrible shooting that took four lives in Georgia just a couple days ago, and here we stand in Harford County with a school shooting.’
The suspect will be charged as an adult, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. The sheriff revealed that the suspect was known to law enforcement, having been involved in previous incidents. While the sheriff couldn’t confirm if the suspect had a juvenile criminal record, he acknowledged that there had been multiple reports and investigations involving the individual.
