Alfred Ruf, Indiana man confesses to spiking wife’s drink in a plea deal so he could kill her and run off with her daughter as man is sentenced to only 4 years jail.
An Indiana man has admitted to poisoning his wife over a period of months in a bid to kill her, so he could run off and marry her daughter.
Alfred W. Ruf, 71, was sentenced this week to four years prison and five years probation upon his release after pleading guilty to aggravated battery posing a risk of death for the 2021 poisonings that sent his wife to the hospital several times, the Kansas City Star reported.
A charge of conspiracy to commit murder was dismissed as part of a plea deal, court documents stated.
Toxic relationship
The investigation into Ruf began in 2022 when his wife, Lisa Bishop, 51, reported him to police claiming he was trying to poison her, according to police reports cited by Local 12.
The wife complained of ‘unexplained headaches, drowsiness, diarrhea and more’ as a result of the poisoning, according to charging documents, with the wife hospitalized over a number of times. The woman also tested positive for several drugs, including MDMA and cocaine, both of which she claimed she didn’t knowingly take.
Rus initially confessed to her (after ‘feeling bad’) that he had been poisoning her soft drinks. Bishop then found a powdery substance in cans of Coca-Cola.
An attorney for Ruf said the pair had a volatile marriage and said Bishop had run her husband over with a car and ‘beat him bloody’ about a year before his arrest.
The woman at no point was prosecuted.
A probable cause affidavit stated that Bishop and Ruf were known to officers, with police frequently called to their home because of domestic violence issues.
Rus admitted to officers that he was poisoning his wife so he could marry her daughter, WRBL reported.
He also told authorities two other women were involved in the plan, including Bishop’s daughter and her friend, FOX 59 reported.
But there’s more.
Ruf also claimed he was in a sexual relationship with Bishop’s 31-year-old daughter along with the friend USA Today reported.
He told authorities the daughter provided him with the poison and hatched the plan to kill her mother according to charging documents. The daughter has denied being involved in the attempted poisoning.
The daughter and friend have not been arrested or charged.
