3 year old NW Harris County, Houston girl accidentally shoots & kills sister, 4, after finding loaded gun at Texas apartment. Five adults were at the home after one of the sisters found loaded weapon.

And yet again. A three-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her four-year-old sister Sunday night after being left alone in a bedroom at an apartment in Houston, Texas.

The incident is alleged to have occurred just before 8 p.m. local time, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a news release

The two girls and five adults, all of whom were family and friends, were spending time at an apartment on Bammel North Houston Road near Tomball Parkway when the shooting occurred.

According to Gonzalez, the girls and their parents lived at the apartment.

The girls were left in a bedroom by themselves at one point during the night because one parent believed the other was watching them. The three-year-old then found a loaded pistol and shot once, striking her sister, Gonzalez said.

Preventable tragedy

The four-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members heard the shot fired and rushed to the bedroom, secured the firearm and reported the incident to authorities.

‘It just seems like another tragic story of a child gaining access to a firearm and hurting someone else. This time it was a fatal shot, appears to be to her sibling,’ Gonzalez said during a Sunday night news conference.

Gonzalez urges people to ensure their guns are stored where kids cannot reach them, especially entering Spring Break week, when many more kids will be at home.

‘We continue to send the message that this is very preventable,’ Gonzalez said. ‘You’ve got to make sure you’re a responsible gun owner. Secure your weapons in a safe place. It’s got to be more than just to tell the kids not to touch the weapons.’

‘Our hearts are broken. Our deputies are pretty shaken up,’ Gonzalez added, noting that support personnel would be at the scene to assist the officers and family members.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether any of the adults will face charges based on the police investigation, which is still in the preliminary phase, Gonzalez said.

The incident remains under investigation.
